Letters Patent No. 73,411, dated January 14, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINE FOR SIZING HAT-BODIES.
@te tigetule referaat tu in this: Miers ment mrt uniting part nf its smut.
To ALL WHOM 1T' MAY CONCR'N:
Beit known that I, HENRY WARNER, of the city of Newark, iu the county oi' Essex, and State of New Jersey, have mede certain Improvements in Machines for Sizing Hats; und I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference beingbad herein tothe drawings that accompany this specification, and which make part of thesame.
Theinature of my improvement consists in giving to the roll of the hat-body a motion similex` to that ofthe hand, by peculiar devices, and in provisions in the machine which adapt it to the various kinds of material that may be used, and for wet or dry work, as the ease may require.
In the drawings, A shows the frame; B, a triple crank; C, a movable board, secured to the two connecting rods z e; D, an under sliding boord, moved by the centre crank, and by the crooked connecting-rodYg/lnn'd E, a broad trough to carry oi the water. F shows a pair of expressing-rollers, G a hot-water, and II u. steempipe, and I a weight on the upper moving board. The roll of huts is shown by z. The injection-box, for hot water or steam', is shown ,at wf It will he seen that, as the board C is fast to the connecting-rods, and rests upon the roll x, the cranks, when they move 'the board forward, tilt it, so thatthe hinder part is the lowest,
thus giving a pushing force behind the roll, in addition to therolling motion, and as soon us the cranks change -tbe direction, they tilt djown the forward edge of C, and continue the same pushing rolling motion in the backward rolling. Bars of various weight, placed ns shown at I, nre used to regulate the pressure. Tothe lower board, D, motion is given by the centre crank, the direction of the motion being the reverse of C. The working faces of the boards C and D are slightly corrugated, and, for some kinds ofwork, covered with cloth. By the weight I the machine can he adapted to every degree of light or heuvy work, according to the nature of the material. n The pipes Gr and H are respectively connected, at one end,to suitable snpplying-'sources for hot water and 'for steam, and the supply of either or both, to the box or chamber w, which distributes the. same on the material, .is regulated at will, as the operator may desire, in order to hasten or retard the felting process, by means of stopcocks. By using the steum-pipe H only, I subject the material to the process known as the hot dry process, 'and by the employment of the water-pipe Gr, to the wet process.` As the roll with the hat or hats frequently gets into a position not at right angles with the working boards, two uprights, v v, are constructed, as shown at J, which, being loose in the board C, can move up and downwhen the wheels in their lower extremities come in Contact with the lower board D. These upright-s bring theI roll square with the boardsyand keep it always in its work. A cord, t, fast to the upper board C, is led over suitable pulleys, und conducted to a position easily accessible to the operator, for him to lift and hold up the board C while he changes the roll for what is.,r technically termed crossing, which is changing the position of the hat-body or bodies in the cloth which v envelopes them, and the expressing-rolls F are used nt the same time, when the hotwet work is being clone. That I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure, is
1. Theccmbination of the reciprocating rocking platen or boardC, platen or1 board D, andconnecting-rods z y, with the crank-shaft B, as and forthe purpose described.
2. 'Ihe injectors G and H, and the distributore/J, when used in combination with the boards C and D, substantially as shown.
The expressing-rollers F and the weights I, when combined with the described sizing-machine, in tho manner and for the purpose specified.
HENRY WA RNER.
Witnesses.
