Description

'0. M, LARSON. vmmmn. AFPLIGATION FILED JULY 30,1908.
903,205. I Patented Nov. 10, 1908.
- am. WM
v r *"w i to Be it I CARL M. LARSON, OF LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent Patented Nov. 10, 1908.
Application filed July 30, 1908. Serial No. 446,050.
To (1,"! whom it may concern:
t it known that l, CARL M. LARSON, a sub ect of the lxling of Denmark, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of ebraska, have invented a new and useful ii reach, 01 which the following is a specification.
My ioven tlon rela t cs to wrenches for turnnuts amt bolts; and tire object is to pro- \i s an (ancient, durable and inexpensive, d adjustable wrench. i: l. the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is he view ol' n improved Wrench. Fig. 2 lal'l :.i,lltl edge view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a 'luW ol the front portion oi the handle. is a lcl'i hand. edge view of Fig. 25. Fig. .11 and ion ol' the hollowworm screw by lhe movable jaw is adjusted.
1" "o the droning by rrlcronce nu- Hal-es what may be i'ern'iod the it is only secured to the or" 1;. lheln'ceil' the llat l, and. adjacent to the e handhslides the shank oi a movable "Z. The rear edge of the shank (l 's groomd to guide on the diagonal and rounded edge e oi the handle and. is "for some distance provided with threads 9 in which engages a hollow worm screw it), revolving on a stud 11 which is secured in one ed e otthc handle and may have a slit 12 in o t for the application of a screw driver ing the stud. in the handle.
,lzear the outer end of the stud 'l'orn'ied a notch. or cut-away l3 and to the jaw l is soired at 14 a llat spring arm 15 having a rim slot 16 for the shank 6 to inove sl'n'ongn. The terminal l? of said slot nor- 5 v cn irages the stud ll and thereby holds Lllfi) worm screw in operative engagement uith the rack ll. lint when it is desired to 11love the jaw 7 quickly to or from the jaw "he operator presses the free end of the arm to the position shown in dotted rough l he in line with tho reduction or notch iii of the stud. 'lhis allows the. int]? die and. stud to swing at once on the pivot :5 and d sengage the worm screw from the rack. After the rack is slid to the desired position, the handle and stud are simply swung toi 15.1 1 so that the terminal l? of the Ward the rack and the spring arm will of its own accord spring into normal position u on the stud and thus hold the screw and rec in meshing contact for finer adjustment of the j aws.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is i. In a wrench, the combination with a handle having a straight bearing edge near its front end, of a jaw having two flat arms pivoted one at each. side of the front part of the handle, an adjustable jaw facing the first mentioned jaw and having a shank formed. with rack teeth and slidingly inserted between the arms of the first jaw'and guided also between the terminal of the gap between the arms and the bearing face near the end of the handle, a stud on the handle adjacent the rack, a hollow-worm screw revolving on the stud and normally engaging the rack, said stud having near its end a reduced portion forming a clearing, a spring arm secured to the pivoted jaw and having a slot for the rack and the stud, the terminal of the slot near the free end of the arm serving to engage over the stud and hold the worm screw in engagement with. the rack, and the clear ing near the end of the stud serving to per mit disengagement of the screw and the rack when the spring arm is brought into line with said clearing.
2. In a wrench, the combination with handle having a straight beari 1g e its front end, of a jaw having ti pivoted one at each side of the front pa; the handle, an adjustable j aw facin the first mentioned jaw and having a shan 2 formed with rack teeth and slidingly inserted between the arms of the first jaw and guided also between the terminal of the gap between the arms and the bearingvface near the end of the handle, a stud on the handle adjacent the rack, a hollow worm. screw revolving on the stud and normally engaging the'rack, said stud having near its end a reduced portion forming a clearing, a spring arm secured to the pivoted jaw and having a slot for therack and the stud, the terminal ol the slot near the free end of the arm serving to engage over the stud and hold the worm screw in engagement with the rack, and the clearing near the end of the'stud serving to permit disengage- In testimony whereof I affix my signature, 2 ment of the screw and the rack when the in presence of two witnesses. i
s ring arm is brou ht into line with said c earing, said shank fin the adjustable jaw be- C L LARSON 5 ing grooved all along the edge havin the Witnesses:
