Description

UNITED v STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. STRIOKLER, OF PIGKERINGTON, OHIO.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 244,685, dated July 19, 1881.
Application filed June 7, 1881. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. STRICKLER, ot Pickerington, in the county of Faireld, and inthe State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a fnl-l, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in wrenches 5 and it has for its objects to provide a device in which the mechanism for operating the adjustaple parts will be at the extremity ot' the handle-so as to leave the parts in the neighborhood of the clamping ends of the jaws free from obstructions', whereby the jaws may be permitted to work closeup to the surfaces ot' the parts secured by nuts or burrs in buggies and other vehicles, and machinery in general. These objects I attain by the device illustrat'ed'in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved device, and Fig. 2 an end View thereot'. Fig. 3 shows certain parts in section.
The letter A indicates twov spring-jaws, secured at one end to the head B, which is provided with lateral handles O. The said jaws diverge from the head B to a point, D, near their free ends, from which point they converge to the points E and then extend forward in nearly parallel lines, as indicated by the letter F. To the converging parts G of the jaws is secured a sliding brace, H, having inclined apertures I, through which the said converg` ing portions pass. The said braceis provided with an internally screw-threaded extension, K, in which is adapted to gear the screw-threaded end of a rod, L, located between the jaws and 4o passing through an aperture in the head B. The said rod L is shouldered at M, the shoulder bearing against the inner-face of the head, so that when the rod is turned in the proper direction-it will project the brace forward. The 45 upper end of the rod Lis provided with a thumbnut, N, between which and the head is secured a loosely-fitting washer, l?. rlhe said thumbnut is secured by means of an ordinary screwnut, R, fitting on the outer end ot' the rod L, 5o which is screw-threaded for the purpose.
It will be seen that by turning the rod L in Vopposite directions the brace will be moved back and forth upon the converging portions of the jaws, causing the jaws to approach or recede for the purposes ot' adjustment.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-'- The herein-described wrench, consisting of 6o two sprin g-jaws secured to a suitable head provided with lateral handles, the said jaws diverging to a suitable point, then converging and nally extending forward in nearly parallel linesto their extremities, and a sliding brace adapted to traverse the converging portions, the said brace being provided with a threaded extension, in which is adapted to work a screwthreaded shouldered rod passing through an t opening in the head and provided with a thumb- 7 o nut on its outer end, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 20th day of May, 1881. i
A JOHN H. STRICKLER. Witnesses:
