ALFRED AUSTIN WHITLEY, OF WHITEFIELD, BURY, ENGLAND.
CLIP FOR GLO'IH-STEN'TERING- MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 3, 1908.
Application filed August 19, 1907. Serial No. 389,129.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED AUsTIN WHIT- LEY, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, of East View, Higher Lane, Whitefield, Bury, in the county of Lancaster, England, engineer, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clips for Stentering-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to clips used in stentering machines for stretching and finishing fabrics, which clips are provided with an upper jaw which grips the fabric between itself and a lower jaw, or plate, when the fabric moves from beneath a gage-tongue, or finger, so that the said gage-tongue, or finger, descends through an opening in the lower jaw, or plate, and releases the upper jaw, and the object of my invention is to so construct such jaws, or one of them, as to make the "rip of the jaws, or the fabric, more secure t an is the case with clips as hitherto constructed.
According to my invention I swivel, or hinge, the part of the upper jaw, or of the lower jaw, or of both the jaws, which bears on the fabric, to the main part of the jaw, or jaws, so that when the clip is at work the said swiveled, or hinged, part, or parts, will turn in planes transverse to the length of the machine and be forced by the fabric from one position to another in such planes, for example from a horizontal into an inclined position, so as to give a firm wedge-like grip on the fabric, and to distribute the pressure evenly across the selvage edge held by the jaws and so prevent marking or damage to the selvage.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation, of a clip with my invention applied to the lower jaw. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation, and Fig. 4 a front elevation, of a clip with my invention a plied to the upper jaw, and, Fig. 5 is a side e evation showing my invention applied to both jaws.
Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2; A is the movable lower jaw formed with lugs a, the base B of the clip also carrying lugs 19. Through these lugs a and 1) passes a hinge pin a. The spiral springs (1 around the pin a and in spaces between the lugs b and the central lug a, have their ends bearing on the said lug a and on the adjacent lugs b so as to return the lower jaw A to its normal position bearing against the front edge of the plate e (or away from it if desirable) when the upper jaw F ceases to bear on the lower jaw A.
In the modification Figs. 3 and 4 the gripping part F of the upper jaw F is swiveled, or hinged, by a hinge pin 0 to the main part of the said upper jaw F, the lower jaw, or plate, A being made rigid.
In the modification Fig. 5, both the gripping part of the upper jaw F and the lower jaw A are made capable of swiveling, or turning, by a combination of the arrangements described with regard to Figs. 1 and 2 and Figs. 3 and 4. As these parts are repe titions of those shown in Figs. 1 to 4 and are marked with the same reference letters the construction is readily understood without repeating the description.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is 1. A stentering machine clip, having a cloth plate, an independent lower grip ing jaw, pivoted with relation thereto, an an upper jaw coacting with the pivoted lower jaw, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A stentering machine clip, having a cloth plate, an inde endent lower gripping jaw, pivoted with re ation thereto, an upper jaw coacting with the lower jaw, and spring means to return said lower jaw to normal position when not engaging the fabric.
3. A stentering machine clip, having a pivoted upper jaw provided with an independent gripping face, pivotally connected thereto, in combination with a lower jaw independent of the cloth plate and pivoted with relation to the latter, substantially as described.
4. A stentering machine clip having a cloth plate, a lower jaw, a pivoted upper jaw cooperating therewith and provided with a pivoted gripping face adapted to be swung in a plane transverse to the length of the machine by the fabric treated so as to insure a firm grip thereon, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ALFRED AUSTIN WHITLEY.
