E. B. LINDSEY.
WIRE STRETCHER.
APPLICATION FILED was. NIB.

UWTEE TATE EDDIE B. LINDSEY, OF BUFFALO, ALABAMA.
WIRE-STBETCHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. i, 1916.
Application filed August 5, 1916. Serial No. 113,299.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDDIE B. Lnvnsnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Chambers and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in fire- Stretchers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improve ments in wire stretchers and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the same may be employed with equal facility for a multiplicity of purposes such as a jack and as a vise.
The invention also has for an object to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including a screw bar provided with means for rotating the same together with two coacting jaws, one of said jaws having a substantially fixed position longitudinally of the bar while the second jaw is capable of movement longitudinally of the bar upon rotation thereof.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein two relatively movable aws are employed and wherein each of said jaws is provided with means whereby a wire or the like may be clamped thereto.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved wire stretcher whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in top plan illustrating a wire stretcher constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, a coacting post being indicated in section; Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 8 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating the base plate as herein embodied, the coacting screw her being shown in section; and Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 55 of Fig. 1, a coacting portion of the sen w bar being shown in elevation.
is disclosed in the accompanying draw-' ings, P denotes a plate preferably formed in two sections and connected one to the other through the medium of the bolts 1, and the adjacent margins of the sections are provided with the upstanding flanges 2 which, when the sections are in assembled relation, afford a socket 3 for the reception of an end portion of the bar 4.
The flanges 2 are provided with the in- Wardly directed beads or ribs 5 adapted to be received within an annular groove 6 produced within the bar 4 whereby it will be perceived that the bar 4: has swiveled connection with the plate P. it is also preferred that the flanges 2 be provided with the registering perforate ears 7 through which additional clamping bolts 8 are disposed. The opposite end portion of the bar 4 is enlarged, as at 9, and is loosely disposed through the sleeve 10 of the jaw A. Fixed to the bar a inwardly of the sleeve 10 and contacting therewith is the sleeve 11 whereby it will be perceived that the sleeve 10 and its jaw A are held against movement longitudinally of the bar 4: but are capable of movement therearound.
Suitably affixed to the bar 4: adjacent the plate P is a ratchet operating member R whereby the requisite rotation may be imparted to the bar l. The operating member B may be of any construction which will best meetthe requirements of practice and as the specific construction thereof forms no part of my present invention, it is thought that a detail description and illustration thereof is unnecessary.
The periphery of the bar 4 intermediate the operating member R and the sleeve 10 is threaded and said threaded portion is disposed through and operatively engaged with the second jaw B, one end portion of which being extended, as at 12, and adapted to contact with a fence post or the like when the device is employed as a wire stretcher. When used as a wire stretcher it is to be understood that the bar 4. is horizontally disposed and if used solely for the purpose of stretching a wire, the wire to be stretched is secured, in a manner which will hereinafter both of the jaws A and B in a manner and for a ur 3058 which is believed to be clearl P apparent to those skilled in the art to whlch my invention appertams.
Corresponding faces of the jaws A and B, the upper faces when the bar 4 1s 1n horizontal position, are provided with the longitudinally directed grooves or channels 14; in each o'lwhich is positioned a block 15 having its inner "face serrated and provided with the overlying flange 16. Also positioned within the groove l l 1s a second block 17-hav1ng its inner face also serrated and which is adapt= ed to coact with the block 15 to clamp a wire therebet'ween. pass beneath the flange 16 whereby it will be at once self-evident that the fiange'lG serves to hold the wire between the jaws especially during the clamping operation. Threaded through an end of the jaw is the operating screw 18 which coacts with the block 17 and serves as a medium whereby the wire may be effectively malntained between the aws 15 and 17. It is to be noted that the jaw B is also provided with a sleeve 19 and with which the bar 1 directly coacts. It is also to noted that the opposed faces of the jaws A and B at their corresponding free end portions are also serrated so that when required said jaws may be conveniently employed as a vise. 7
V f i Nhen it is desired to employ my improved device as a jack the end portion of the jaw r B opposite to the extension 12 is employed in a manner I '7 dent. It will also be appreciated that when the device is'used as a jack theupper jaw A may be readily swung into such a position as to afford no obstruction. I also find it of advantage to provide the jaw A with 7 hand graspto facilitate the handling of the' the extension 20 which serves as a handle or implement.
When the device is employed as ajack in connection with heavy work it has been tound of particular advantage to secure the Copies of this patent may be obtained for V V in carrying out my invention in This block 17 s adapted to which is believed to be self-evifive cents each, by; Washington, D. 0.
plate P to a block of .woodor the like and for. this reason I: provide the corner portions j of the plate P with the openings 21 through which suitable anchoring means are adapted to be disposed in order to securely aflix the same to said block. 7 r 7 From the foregoing descript on, t 1s thought to be obvious that a wire stretcher constructed in accordance with my invention inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted foruse by reason of the convenlence and facllity with which it may be assembled;
is of an extremely simple and comparatively 7 and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from'the principles and spirit thereof and for this'rea son I do not wish to be understood as limit- 7 ing myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown ceptas hereinafter claimed.
-IClz11IIlI practice, 7 ex -1. A device of the character describede comprising an elongated bar, a rotatably engaged with the bar and held against.movement longitudinally thereof, a second jaw tioned within said groove, and means for imparting movement to one of the blocks relat veto the other.
.80 V capable of movementlongitudinally 'of'the .7 bar, each of said aws being'provided 1n a side face with a groove, a pair of blocks posi- 2 A device of the ,7 character described comprising an elongated bar, a jaw rotatably engaged with'the bar and held against move I ment longitudinally thereof, a second jaw capable of movement longitudinally of the 7 bar, each of said jaws being provided infa I side face-with a groove, a pair of blocks positioned within said groove, and means for impartmg movement'to one of theblocks relative to the other, said movable block being provided with a flangeextending in a dire-c; tion toward the second block'and adapted to 1 overlie the same when said blocks are in close" proximity one to the other. e V
