SLIDDTG TOP FOB CABINETS.
Specification 0: Letters Patent.
Patel! Oct-20, 1908.
Application 11106. June 1, 1908. man No. smut.
' Ditliculties havebeen heretofore eXperi-' enced, in the manufacture of kitchen and other calnnets 1n the formation of a sliding top member owing to the fact that, with existing constructions, the sliding portion of I the top had to be somewhat less in extent than the entire top, owing to the necessity of provision of guiding members at the edges, and in practice it has been found that the horizontal joints between the sliding member andthe fixed guides will rehdily become filled with flour, water, etc., so that the parts quickly become distorted.
The object of my present invention is to provide a structure by means of which all difliculty of this kind is avoided and the sliding member will comprise the entire top plate of the cabinet .or table portion of the structure.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention. v
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cabinet embodying my improved structure; Fig. 2 a transverse sectional detail; Fig. 3 a per spective detail of theiplate which forms the essential feature-of my invention; Fig. 4 a longitudinal vertical sectional detail on. a smaller scale.
In the drawings,'10 indicates the main body or table portion which, at-its upper end, is provided with frame members 11. The frame members 11. which are the sides of the structure are rabbeted attheir rear ends to receive a plate 12'which is substantially U-sh'aped" in transverse section the upper lip 13 being substantially parallel with the lower lip'but conveniently somewhat shorter, and a distance from-the main body of the plate a trifle greater than the of a ooden core and an, incasing metal cover 15. Lip 13 of plate 12 is provided I. upon its upper face, with an upwardly extending flange 16 set back from the inner".
form a pocket 17 forthe'reception of the lower ends of the side plates 18 of the upper' structure 19, the lower 'endsof-the plates 18 resting in the pocketst17 and being secured to flange 16 by any-suitable means, such for instance as screws 19. If desired, roller supports 21 maybe placed the-side bars 11 to support the forward end of,the sliding top 14.
edge of theilip 13 a distance sufiicient to' I also find it convenient to secure ,to the under side of sliding top 14 a cam stop 22 which, when the to 14: is drawn forwardly to the position indicated in dottedlinesi'n Figs. 1 and 4, will ride upover the forward bar 11 and drop down in front of the same bar 23 is also secured to the to prevent too great forwarqmovement of top 14.
The line of bend in plate 12, by which lip 13 is formed, may be extended to any desired practical extent beyond the outer edges of} a the side bars 11 so that top l lm-ay be given any desired overhang, asclearly shown in the drawings but this overhang does not in any way interferewith the proper support table structure having a forwardly sl ding top, a pair of U shaped plates having their lower arms secured to opposite sides of the table structure at the rear corners thereof beneath the top and their uppersides. loosely;v
overlapping the rearcorners of the sliding top, and a cabinet superstructure secured to the upper arms of the U=shaped plates. 1
2; A kitchen cabinet comprising a table structure having a forwardly sliding 7 top, a pair of U-shaped plates having their lower arms secured to opposite sides olE-the table structure at the. rear corners thereof of the upper-cabinet 19'norrloes'it require J 1'; A kitchen cabinet comprising amain' beneath the top and their upper sides loosely overlappingthe rear corners of the sliding 1 shaped plates and secured to said vertical top,v a vertical flange carried by the upper my hand and seal at Indianapolis,-Indiana, face 'of each of the upper arms of said U-' this twenty-ninfl day of May, A.
