ALL-STEEL CAR-DOOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, rate.
Application filed July 12, 1915. Serial No. 39,284.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT J. B. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of N ew York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in All-Steel Car-Doors, of which the following is a full,
clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in all steel car doors.
An object of the invention is to provide an all steel door for box cars and the like which is provided with novel means for pre-,
vertical section, upon an enlarged scale taken on the line 22" of Fig. 1, parts being broken away in order to prevent crowding of the drawing. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view similar to Fig. 2 and taken on the line 3-31of Fig. 1. And Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view taken on the line H of 2.
In said drawing, 10 denotes the side walls of the car, the car being provided with a 2 bar side sill 11, floor boards 12, front and rear door posts 13 and 14 and joist 15 forming the door lintel. Mounted on the upper face of the side sill 11 is a longitudinal wood sill 16 to which the floor boards are adapted to be nailed, said sill 16 being faced on its outer side With a longitudinally extending board 17 The side plate or joist 15 is faced on its outer side by fascia boards 18 and 19.
The door A, as shown, comprises a rectangular metal sheet 20 conforming to the size of the door opening, said metal sheet 20 being suitably braced along its vertical outer edges by U shaped members 2121 and at its center by a similar member 22. Along the upper edge of the door A is secured a longitudinally extending S shaped member 23, (see Fig. 2), .the upper portion of which slides within a longitudinally extending recess formed by a plate 24 secured by bolts or otherwise to the upper structure of the door frame. At its lower edge, the door is provided with a stiflener in the form of an angle iron 25, the depending flange 26 of which, on the side nearest the door frame has its lower edge 27 curled upwardly to form an interlocking seal joint with a plate 127 secured along the lower edge of the door frame, said plate 127 having its outer edge bent downwardly as indicated at 28. To support the door, track supporting brackets 29 are secured to the side sill 11 and board 17, said brackets 29 being suitably spaced as clearly indicated in Fig. 1 and having attached to their outer ends a longitudinally extending channel 30 the flanges of which are inwardly turned as clearly indicated in Fig. 2. The upper flange 31 of the channel forms a track on which rides the rollers 32 mounted in roller brackets 33 secured to the angle 25 along. the bottom of the door. Each of the roller carrying brackets 33 has the inner leg thereof provided With a hobk shaped lip or flange 34 at the bottom which is adapted to engage under the flange 31 of the channel 30, thereby interlocking with the latter and preventing accidental reinoval 3r outward swing of the door. To the outer face of the forward door post 13 is secured a 2 bar 35 having its outer flange 36 spaced rom the outer face of the post and thereb adapted to receive the forward edge of the door when the latter is in closed position and in this connection, it will be observed that said edge of the door is suitably strengthened by means of a plate 37 secured thereto as shown in Fig. 3. Tohelp secure the 2 bar 35 and to suitably brace it, a plurality of brackets 38 are provided of the form shown in Fig. 3 and riveted or otherwise secured as illustrated in said figure and in Fig. 1;
By referring to Fig. 3, it will be seen that the outer face of the rear post 14 is extended beyond the face of the side boards of the car and has secured thereto a vertically extending plate 39 the rear edge of which is spacedfrom the side of the car and forms a recess or groove within which door.
From the preceding description, it will be seen that the front and rear edges of the door when closed are seated in grooves provided therefor and that the lower edge of the door is sealed by means of the interlocking flanges 27-28, thereby securing a seal adapted to prevent leakage of grain or similar bulk material. In addition to the foregoing, the interlocking seal' forming flanges 27 and 28 will serve to prevent accidental displacement of the door and thus cooperatewith the interlocking lips 34 and track flange 31 in effecting this result. Similarly, at the top of the door, the interlocking 8 shaped member 23 and overhanglng top guide 2 L prevent the door from swinging or falling outwardly. In addition to the foregoing, it will be observed that in the event of accidental failure of the track or rollers for supporting the door at its lower edge the interlocking S shaped member 23 and top guide 24 will serve as an auxiliary track and support for the door.
As will be understood by those skilled in the art, the various sections employed for the track, seal forming flanges, top guide and other elements, may be made either in the form of commercially rolled sections, pressed sections, or cast sections. Also,al though I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred embodiment of my improvement, I am aware that changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention and all such changes and modifications are contemplated as come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim: 1. In a car having a door opening and a slidable door for closing said opening, a
combined track and fender extending horizontally along one edge of the door opening and having an inwardly extending upper flange, brackets secured to the corresponding adjacent edgeof the door, said brackets carrying rollers cooperating with said track,. said brackets being provided with outwardly extending flanges at their lower ends disposed beneath said upper flange of the combined track and fender, said flanges thereby preventing upward and outward displacement of the door.
2. In a car having a door opening, the
combination with a plurality of brackets nasema secured to the car below the door opening and a channel shaped track secured to the outer ends of said brackets, of a slidable door mounted on rollers secured tothe bottom edge thereof, the car being provided with a plate alongthe lower edgeof the door opening, said plate having a downturned flange, and said door being provided door mounted on rollers secured to the bottom edge thereof, the car being provided with a plate along the lower edge of the door opening, said plate having a downturned flange, and said door being provided with an upwardly turned hook shaped flange along its lower edge cooperating with said downturned flange'to form a seal, and hook shaped lips carried by said door along its lower edge'arrangedto engage beneath the upper flange of said hannel track.
4. In a car having a side door opening, the combination with' a track extending along the lower edge of the door opening, said track consisting of a hannel, of a slidable door, roller carrying brackets secured to the lower edge of said door, said brackets having hook shaped lips arranged to engage beneath the upper flange of said channel track, rollers carried bylsaid brackets and riding upon the upper flange of said channel track, a top guide plate secured to the side of the car along the top edge of the door openidg, and a member S-shaped in cross section secured to the top edgeof the door and cooperating with said guide to prevent the door from swinging outwardly and serv-
