STOVEPIPE AND FLIIE-STOPPER FASTENER.

proved Stovepipe and Flue-Stopper Fastenor, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention is an improvement in fasteners for retaining either the stove pipe in the flue opening or a stopper over the flue when the latter is not in use, and has for an object the provision of means for preventing the drawing or pushing of the pipe into the flue beyond the required point, and also means adapting fasteners of the same size to be applied to chimneys or lines of varying thicknesses. This and other objects I attain by constructing the fastener with an attaching-bar having its ends angular-1y turned at one side thereof, one of which makes an acute angle with the body of the bar, whereby the shortest dimension between the ends may be varied by springing the acute or inclined end outwardly. At an intermediate point of the attaching bar a post or projection is secured, which not only affords a stop for the pipe, but also carries the means for securing the stopper when the flue is to be closed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the stove pipe where it joins with the chimney flue partly in central vertical section, with one embodiment of my improvement applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a like View showing a modified form of arrangement; Fig. 3 is a sectional view illustrating the manner in which the fastener is used for securing the flue stopper, as when the flue is not in use; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the fastener removed from the flue.

In the construction of the fastener, I employ an attaching-bar 5, having the ends thereof angularly turned to one side, one of said ends making substantially a right-angle with the body of the bar, and the other being turned inwardly at an acute angle with the body of the bar, the extremity of this last mentioned end presenting a concave edge 6, whereby when the bar is applied to the flue in the chimney, as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3, the right-angular end will press flat against Specification of Letters Patent.

the wall at the outer face of the chimney, and the opposite and acutely-turned end will bite into the brick, or other material of which the chimney is composed, at the inside of the chimney and hold the attaching-bar securely in place. This construction of the bar obviously also admits of the acutely-turned end being sprung to accommodate chimneys having walls of varying thicknesses.

At an intermediate portion of the attaching-bar is rigidly secured a post or projection 7, pivotally supporting at its free end, arms 8 and 9, located respectively at the opposite sides of the post, the arm 8 presenting an engaging extremity similar to that indicated at 6, and the arm 9 having its extremity offset and provided with a notch 10. Also carried by the attaching-bar, adjacent to its rightangular end, is a plate 1 1 pivoted thereto and provided with an opening 12.

In the application of the fastener when it is used for securing the stove-pipe within the chimney flue, as shown in Fig. 1, the arms 8 and 9 are turned to extend along-side the post 7, and the attaching-bar is engaged at the top of the flue opening. At the elbow of the pipe is secured the usual band 13, which is connected. with the plate 11 by a wire or other equivalent means 14, the wire passing through the opening 12 in said plate and is under suflicient tension to force the end of the pipe against the post or stop 7. This form of connection will not only retain the pipe in the chimney flue but will also pull and keep the sections of the pipe between the elbow and chimney tight at the oints.

In Fi 2 is shown the preferred manner of using the fastener when the elbow of the pipe is arranged closely adjacent to the chimney. In this instance the attaching-bar is placed at the bottom of the flue opening and the band 13 is connected directly with the plate 11 by passing a rivet or such other device through an opening in the band and through the opening 12 of the plate. When the flue opening in the chimney is to be closed and a stopper 15 applied, the arm 8 is swung to engage the bore of the flue opening directly opposite to the attaching bar, the arm 9 is swung in the direction opposite to that of the edge 6, and to a position substantially parallel to the bar 5, and the plate 11 is turned in to extend in the opposite direction. A bolt 16 is engaged in the notch 10 of the arm 9 and passes through a central opening in the stopper. The nut on the bolt is then drawn up to force the margin of the stopper against the Wall with the requisite firmness.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In a stove-pipe fastener, a device having means for securing it Within a flue opening, a post carried by said device, means connected with said device for holding the stovepipe against said post, and means carried by the post for securing a covering over said opening.

2. In a stove-pipe fastener, a device adapted to be secured within a flue opening, a post permanently secured to the device, and arms pivotally supported directly on said post for retaining a covering-over said opening.

3. In a stove-pipe fastener, a device adapted to be secured within a flue opening,

a post permanently secured to said device, and arms pivotally supported on said post, one of which is adapted to engage the wall of said opening opposite said device, and the other having means for securing a cover over said opening.

4. In a stove pipe fastener, a bar having means at its opposite ends for securing it within a flue opening, a post secured to and projecting from the bar, a member pivoted to the post adaptedto engage the wall of the opening opposite thereto, and means connected with the post for securing a cover over said opening.
