To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT A. BRIGGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the borough of Manhattan and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typeriting Machines, of which the following is. a specification.
This invention relates to typewriting machines, and has particular reference toan improved device or attachment for typewriting enabling the operator to quickly and neatly.

ith these and other objects in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
The essential features of the invention involved in carrying out the foregoing objects are'necessarily susceptible to a wide range of structural-modificat1on, and also to a wide range of application to different kinds of typewriting machines, without departing from the'sco e of the invention, one of the preferred embodiments of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is aside elevation of a special form of machine in connection with which my invention may be used to advantage. Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic sectional view of the special machine shown in Fig. 1, and illustrating more clearly the normal inoperative position of the auxiliar character. Fig. 3 is a detail elevation of tie rear part of the traveling type carriage, showing a practical manner of mounting the auxiliary character. Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic view of the auxiliary character operating device shown in its inoperative relation to the platen and )apcr thcrcon. My invention is capable of general application to any make of typewriting machine embodying a platen and wherein the movcment of the platen or of the type action, or both, may be utilized in operating the device. Hence, the device is applicable to standard typewriting machines having stationary type actions and traveling platens or vice versa, but, inasmuch as the i1nprovcments forming the subject matter of this application possess special utility in their application to the special form of machine disclosed in my allowed application, Serial No. 221,756, filed August 22, 1904, the same are illustrated in the drawings in connection with a machine of that construction. in
this special machine, a distinctive feature thereof resides inathe combination of a traveling type carriage carrying the printing instrumentalities, and a traveling paper carriage carrying the platen, its auxiliaries, and
also carrying a ribbon mechanism, the purpose of this combination being to provide means for dividing, between the two carriages, the travel necessary to go from the final letter of one printed line to the initial letter of the next printed line, thus effecting a very great saving in time and space rcquired for this purpose.
Referring to the illustrated embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, tlic numeral 1 designates the main horizontal base portion of the machine, which base portion is provided, preferably at the back thereof, with an upright base section 2 having thereon at the top the opposite parallel track rails 3 supporting the front and rear traveler rollers 4 and 5, respectively, of the frame 6 of the traveling paper carriage: This paper carriage is designated in its ontirety by the numeral 7 and comprises the carriage carrying the paper handling and said, the two carriages 7 an supporting devices, including the platen P, withwhich platen is associated a shift key mechanism, (not claimed herein) for raising and. lowering the same to effect 11 per and lower case printing as will be well understood by those familiar with the art. In addition to these instrumentalities the paper carriage supports and carries the entire ribbon mechanism. This ribbon mechanism embodies in its general organization oppositely arranged ribbon spools S arranged on suitable sup orts, and dis osed obliquely in rear of'the l aten and held at a higher elevation than t e axis of the latter, so that the I ribbon R assumes an inclined position. The
: of the oblique disposition of the spools and the inclination of the end runs of the ribbon is that the path of the ribbon is brought above the axis of the platen out of the way of the platen shaft, and also permits the operator to inspect the work, while at the same time the operative portion of the ribbon is disposed in a cooperative relation to the auxiliary character or characters forming a part of the present invention. The actuating means for the ribbon spools comprises suitable gearing controlled through the movement of the paper carriage, substantially as and in the manner fully set forth in the other application aforesaid.
The main horizontal base portion 1 of the machine has suitablysupported therein the front and rear rail sections or members 8 and 9 on which travel the front and rear rollers 10 and 11 of the frame 12 of the traveling type or type action carriage. This latter carriage is designated in its entirety by the reference number 13 and comprehends the traveling carriage with the printing instrunientalities supported and carried thereby, i. e. the type action which includes the key and operatin devices.
As set fort in the other ap lication afored 13 have independent traveling supports upon separate parts of the base, and the paper carriage 7 is arranged in a higher plane than the type carriage 13 to insure perfectly visibility of writing, while at the same time presenting the most favorable arrangement for the effective working of my invention. Also, as set forth in said application, the two carriages are coupled together for movement in unison, but in opposite directions, whereby a division of the travel may be properly apportioned to each carriage to elfect a saving in time and space required to go from the final letter of one printed line to the initial letter of the next printed line.
The auxiliary character preferably employed consists of a revoluble wheel arranged to print a continuous line across the page for underscoring purposes, and in the drawings I have shown such a device and also an additional auxiliary character consisting of a revoluble wheel carrying canceling character which may consist of any suitable canceling mark, one of saidauxiliary characters being operative when the paper carriage is in lower case 'position and the other when the carriage is in upper case position.
The operating mechanism for the specific forms of auxiliary characters illustrated herein comprises a rock shaft 15 journaled in suitable bearings at the rear of the type basket opening 16, and carrying at one end a rocker arm 17 hearing the eccentrically disposed pins 18 at different distances from the axis of the shaft, and cooperating with the separated gear notches 19 at the upper end of one arm of the bell crank operating lever 20 pivoted at its angle, as at 21, at one side .of the type carriage frame and having a key 22 adjacent to 'the key-board. The elements 18 and 19 constitute what may beroperly termed a mutilated pin gear, whic 1 serves to lengthen the leverage of the arm 17, as the rock shaft 15 is turned to an operative position. The rock shaft 15 is provided with an intermediate swinging yoke member 23 bearing a head 24 upon which are mounted in spaced relation, the underscoring and canceling elements 25 and 26, res ectively.
In the lower case position of t e platen, when the yoke member or frame 23 is swung up, the underscoring element 25 comes into {3,
position so that by releasing the carriages and sliding the same manually, the underscoring will be accomplished. The other auxiliary character 26 will be operable in a similar manner, it being only necessary to shift the platen to its upper case position.
Referring more particularly to the use of a pair of auxiliary characters 25 and 26, it
will be observed that the same may consist of revolubly mounted wheels, the periphery of the former carrying a single raised line for underscoring purposes, and the periphery of the latter preferably carrying a plurality of cancelin or othercharacters such as the letter Di or individual clot marks, separated dashes or like characters. Thus theo erator, with the right hand depressing the has to actuate the carriage release key and sweep the platenrin either direction, to print the underscoring line beneath one or more words, or the canceling or other characters directly, across the page or across one or more words, thereby efiecting the underscoring or canceling neatly and expeditiously.

From the foregoing it is thought that'the essential features and action of the invention will be readily understood, but it should also be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and minordetails ofconstruction may be resorted to Without departing from the scope of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof,

I claim. a
1. In a ty ewriting machine, a longitudinally movable platen, a ribbon, means, independent of the ribbon feeding mechanism, for moving the ribbon longitudinally with the platen, an auxiliary character, a pivotal support therefor and a key at the keyboard for moving such character into engagement with the ribbon.
2. In a typeu'riting machine, a ribbon movable with the paper carriage, arevoluble member carrying an auxiliary character, a swinging support for said member, and a key in proximity to the type action keys for moving the auxiliary character into printing relation with the ribbon so that a rotatory movement of the member is produced by its engagement with the ribbon.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a "paper carriage, a ribbon, a traveling type carriage, an auxiliary character, a swinging support therefor carried with the type carria e and a, key in proximity to the type action keys of the machine for moving the auxiliary character into printing relation with the ribbon.
4. In a typewriting machine, a printin ribbon, an auxiliary character, a pivota support therefor, a key at the keyboard of the machine for moving the auxiliary character into engagement with the ribbon, and means, other than the ribbon feeding mechanism, for imparting a relative longitudinal movement to the ribbon and auxiliary character.
5. In a typevvriting machine, a printing ribbon, an auxiliary character, comprising a wheel member having a printing mark, a pivotal support therefor, a key at the keyboard of the machine for moving the' auxiliary character into engagement with the ribbon, and means, other than the ribbon feeding mechanism, for imparting a relative longitudinal movement to the ribbon and auxiliary character.
6. In a typewriting machine, the paper carriage,.an auxiliary character consisting of an underscoring mark, a swinging support for said character, and a key at the key board operatively connected with said swinging support.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination with the platen, of a device comprising a rock shaft journaled upon the type carriage frame and carrying an auxiliary character, and an operating key having a variable leverage connection with said rock shaft.
8. In a typewriting machine, the t ype carriage and the paper carriage having a traveling movement in the direction of letter spacing, and a key-controlled combined underscoring and canceling device carried by the type carriage and including a swinging member or frame bearing underscoring and canceling elements arranged in upper and lower case relation.
9. In a typeivriting machine, the type carriage and paper carriage having a movement in the direction of letter spacing, and a keycontrolled combined underscoring and canceling device comprising a rock shaft journaled u on the type carriage frame and having a yo e member bearing underscoring and canceling elements arranged in upper and lower case relation, and an operating key having a variable leverage connection with said rock shaft, said variable leverage connection comprising a rocker arm upon the rock shaft carrying eccentrically disposed pins, and a notched gear member carried by said operating key.
10. In a typewriting machine, the traveling type carriage, the traveling paper carriage, and a key-controlled combined underscorin and canceling device having separate revohible underscoring and canceling elements arranged in upper and lower case rela tion.
