' Be it known that I, WALTER J BARRoN, citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, in the. county of Kings and State of New York, have'inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in TypeVVi'iting May chines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to indicating mechanisin and type bar repulser mechanism for typewriting machines.
VOne object of my-inventioii is to provide Y" improved indicating devices for indicatingv the printing-point on the platen, said devices being simple in character and .near the printing point so that a close adJustment may be obtained of any desired point on ther work sheet to the printing point.
Another object of the invention is to provide improved repulser devices for coperating with the type bars when actuated to facilitate their return from printing to nori ticularly pointed out in the claims.

10v Remington typewriting machine but the nature of said invention is such that it may readily be adapted to other styles of writing machines.
In the accompanying drawings illustrat-l ing one form of my invention, Figure 1 is a "fragmentary vertical front to rear sec' tional view of a No. 10 Remington machine embodying my invention, parts of said ma- Y chine being omitted and parts broken away.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical transverse sectional view of some of the parts shown in Fig. 1 but showing one of the type bars in printing position. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary front elevation of some of the parts shown 0 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary front view on an enlarged scale showing the relationship between the indicating device and the printing point in the shifted position of the platen.
As shown in Fig. 1 the main frame of the lift the shift frame and elevate'- l frame and platen to receive imprints from machine comprises ay base portion l from which rise posts 2 supporting atop plate 3. The bars 22 are oppositely grooved to receive anti-friction balls 23 whichy also cooperate with fixed guide rails 24. lt will be observed that the repulser cooperates with thetype bar at the farthest practicable point from 4the pivot thereof, which is the most eliiective point for coperation. In other words, a slight impulse communicated to the outer cud of the type bar will be more effective than a considerthe position ably greater impulse communicated near. i

it will be noted further that the detachable spring finger herein described is siniple and inexpensive in construction. may be applied without altering the machine in any respect, and provides an effective pointer or indicator for the printing point ou thc platen and also an ellectlve repulscr for tho typo bars, ynfcventing blurring and promoting the speed or' the typebars at the start ol their return movon'lents.
Various changes may be' made without departing -from the scope of my invention.
What l claim as new and desire to .secure by' Letters Patent, is

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of an angular indicating devicehavinga portion extending transversely of the printing line at one side of the printing point and having another portion extending lengthwise of 111e printing line and above the same and terminating in the same vertical line as the printing point, said device remaining constantly in indicating position. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, key controlled type bars, each type bar comprising a type block carrying a plurality of types, and an indicating device havin a portion extending lengthwise of the p aten and adapted atthe printing moment to fit in the space between two ypes on the type block of the actuated type ar. v A 6. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a shiftable platen, of an indicating device shiftable with said platen so as to occupy always the same normal rela- 'tionship iwth respect.to said platen, said indicating device extending lengthwise of the printing line on the platen and terminating in the same transverse line as the printing point, said transverse line extend` `ing at right'angles to the printing line.
7 In a typewriting machine, the combination with a shiftable platen, lof an indicating device shiftablewith said platen so as to occupy always the same normal relationship with respect to said-platen, said indica-ting device extending lengthwiseof the printing line and above the same and terminating above the printing point in the same transverse line as the printingpoint, Isaid transverse line being at right ,angles to the printing line.
8. In a front-strike typewriting machine. the combination with a shiftable platen, of
an indicating device shift-able with said so as always to occupy the same normal. relationship with respect to said platen,l
said indicating device extending lengthwise of the printing line and terminating in .a vertical line which passes through the printl ing point.
9. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a shiftable platen, of an indicating device shiftable with said platen, said indicating device having angularly disposed portions, one portion extending transversely of the printing line at one side of the printing point and another portion extending lengthwise of the printing line and above the same and terminating in the same vertical line as the printing point.

In a typewriting machine, the combinationr with a shiftable platen, of a key controlled shift rail, and a pointer secured to said shift rail and comprising a portion extending transversely of the printing line at one 51de of the printing point and another portion extending lengthwise of the printing line and terminating above the printing point. 11. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, and key controlled t-ype bars, ot' la spring pointerfor indieating the printing point, said pointer acting as a repulser for the type bars.l 12. Ina typewritingmachine, the comblnation of a platen, key controlled type bars each carrying a type block, andv a repulser cooperative with the type blocks, said repulser also acting as a printing point indicator. In a typewriting machine, the combi-v nation of a platen, key actuated type bars each Icomprising a type block carrying two types, and a spring finger cooperating ywith the actuated type bar, said finger co-acting at the printing moment directly with the type block bet-Ween .the two types thereon, said finger also cooperating with the platen to indicate the printing point.
14. In a typewriting machine, the eombination of a shiftable platen, key controlled type bars, and a repulser for said type bars, said repulser being shiftable with said platen. v
