To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK McCoMB, citizen of the United States, residing at Coleman, in the county of Midland and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Hog- Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object a simple, durable and efficient construction of device for holding a hog by the snout during the operation of ringing, the device being adjustable so that it is susceptible to use with a hog of any size, and the invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully de scribe and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved hog holder. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof, and; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the latch rod.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference numerals.
My improved hog holder comprises a tubular casing 1 which is formed in one end with an opening 2 in which one end of a wire or similar snare 3 is secured. The snare 3 is designed to extend into the casing and its other end is secured in an aperture 4 formed in one end of a latch rod 5 designed to move freely in the said casing. The latch rod 5 is formed at its other end with an aperture 6, and a pull rod or wire 7 is secured at one end in the said aperture 6 and carries a hand grip 8 at its other end.
The latch rod 5 is formed with a series of shoulders 9 designed for engagement by the nose of the pawl 11 pivotally mounted on the casing 1 :near one end of the latter, the rear end of the pawl extending towards the opposite end of the casing and having a leaf spring 12 secured thereto and bearing against the casing, so as to rock the pawl into operative engagement wlth the latch rod 5. It 1s to be particularly noted that the shoulders of the latch rod 5 extend entirely around the rod and that the surfaces 9 sloping from one shoulder to the base of the next adjacent shoulder are conical so that the nose 10 of the pawl 1.1 will effectively engage the latch rod 5 no matter how the same may be turned around its longitudinal axis in the casing, and so that the pawl will ride over the conical surfaces when the latch rod is retracted in the casing in a direction to tighten the snare, but will be effectively prevented from a reverse movement until the handle end of the pawl is pressed toward the casing, to disengage the pawl from the latch rod.
in the practical use of my improved hog holder, the snare is caused to encircle the snout of the hog, and the hand grip is pulled by one hand of the operator, while his other hand holds the tubular casing After the operation of inserting a ring in the snout of a hog has been completed, the animal may be quickly released by the operator merely pressing upon the handle end of the pawl ll with that hand which is grasping the casing 1 and, in this respect, it will be noticed that the arrangement of the pawl on the handle is es ecially advantageous in effecting this result.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A device of the character described, com prising a tubular casing, a snare secured at one end to said casing, a latch rod movable freely within the casing and secured to the other end of the snare, means for drawing the latch rod in the casing, and a pawl mounted on said casing and arranged for engagement with the latch .rod, said latch rod being formed with a series of shoulders extending entirely around the rod, and with conical surfaces extending from one shoulder to the next, as and for the purpose set forth.
