UNITED STATES Patented November 1,1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES BRICK, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO ARTHUR M. HOOD, TRUSTEE, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
CUTTING OR CLEANING TOOL.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 774,142, dated November 1, 1904.
Application filed December 23, 1903. Serial No. 186,292. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES BRICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting or Cleaning Tools, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a tool which can be conveniently used for cutting and removing Weeds from lawns and the like or may be used for removing dirt or other matter from deep holes or casings-as, for instance, usual street-boxes used by water and gas companies at the street-valve.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure l is a perspective View with an intermediate portion broken away; Fig. 2, a central vertical section with the jaws distended, and Fig. 3 a similar section with the jaws drawn together.
In the drawings,10 indicates a tubular body provided at its lower end with ahead 11, provided with a pair of substantially parallel channel-shaped fingers 12 12. At the opposite end the body is provided with a slotted head 13, to theupper end of which is fixed a suitable cross-arm 14E. Extending through the slot of head 13 is a cross-arm 15, similar to the cross-arm 1 1, and secured to this crossarm 15 is a rod 16, which extends down through body 10 and has secured to its lower end a strip of spring metal, the opposite ends of which engage the outer ends of fingers 12 and form a pair of coacting jaws or cutters 17 17. Surrounding rod 16, between the spring-strip and the head 11, is a short coiled spring 18.
The operation is as follows: If the instrument is to be used for cutting and removing weeds, the jaws 17 are placed upon opposite sides of the weed and the operator then draws the two handles 1 1 and 15 together, where upon the middle portion of the jaws is drawn between fingers 12 and the jaws thus closed together, as shown in Fig. 3. The jaws are opened automatically upon release of the bar 15 by the spring 18. It will be readily seen from the above that the device is also useful in cleaning out deep holes, the material being gathered between the two jaws.
I claim as my invention 1. In a tool of the class described, the combination with amain hollow body having a pair of fingers,of arod movable through said body, and a spring jaw-strip attached at its middle to said rod and adapted to be engaged by said fingers, whereby the jaw-strip may be drawn between the fingers by a longitudinal movement of the rod.
2. In a tool of the class described, the combination with a main body having a pair of fingers at one end, of a rod longitudinally movable between said fingers, a spring jawstrip having an opening in its middle through which said rod projects, and means for holding the jaw-strip onto the rod against the action of the fingers, whereby the jaw-strip may be drawn between the fingers and the free ends thereof drawn together by a longitudinal movement of therod.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 19th day of December, A. D. 1903.
CHARLES BRICK. [L s.]
