q/Vi H1 000% PATENTED JUNE 30, 1908.

APPLICATION FILED JAN. 31. 190B.

WILLIAM CLINTON BARNES, OF LATROBE, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 30, 1908.
Application filed January 31, 1908. Serial No. 413,556.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM CLINTON BARNES, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Latrobe, in the county of W'estmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wrenches, and the objects of the invention are, first, to provide a simple and inexpensive wrench; second, a wrench that can be easily and quickly adjusted; and third, to provide a wrench wherein the movable jaw can be quickly adjusted and then minutely adjusted to firmly engage a nut or similar object.
I attain the above objects by a wrench of a novel construction that will be presently described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure l is an elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the movable jaw thereof in section, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of a wrench taken on the line of Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a shank having a fixed jaw 2 and a detachable handle 3. The front edge of the shank 1 is provided with teeth l, while the rear edge thereof is smooth.
Slidably mounted upon the shank 1 is a movable gripping j aw 5 having an outerstrap 6 embracing the shank 1, and at its inner end, is provided with arms 7 extending past the rear edge of said shank and of a length to project beyond the strap 6. Between these arms 7 is pivotally mounted a lever 8 having a pawl end engaging the shank and a projecting handle end 9. The lever 8 is normally held in engagement with the rear smooth edge of the shank 1 by a spring 10 secured to the strap 6 of the jaw 5. The front side of the jaw 5 is cut away, as at 11 to accommodate an exteriorly threaded nut 12, retained in the jaw 5 by a pin 13. The nut 12 is adapted to engage the teeth 4 of the shank 1 and prevent the jaw 5 from being adjusted upon said shank, except by rotating the nut 12.
Vhen it is desired to quickly adjust the jaw 5, the handle 9 of the pawl S is pressed towards the shank 1, and as the pawl is normally held against the shank 1 by a spring 10, the jaw 5 will be tilted, carrying the nut 12 out of engagement with the teeth 4 ol' the shank 1, thus allowing the jaw 5 to be quickly moved upon the shank of the wrench.
It will be observed that the upper strap 6 is cut away sufficiently to allow a tilting movement of the jaw while being adjustcd.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
In a wrench, a toothed shank provided at its outer end with a fixed jaw, a movable jaw slidably-mounted on said shank and having a tilting movement on the shank, a strap formed integral with the jaw and having a convex inner face engaging the shank and permitting the tilting movement of the movable jaw on the shank, a screw carried by the movable jaw engaging the teeth of said shank, a pair of arms carried by said jaw extending beyond the rear edge of the shank, a lever pivoted in said arms having a p awl-end engaging the rear edge of the shank and a projecting handle end, and a spring having one end fixed in the strap 01 said jaw and its free end bearing upon the pawl-end of said lever for holding the said screw in engagement with the teeth of said shank,
In testimony whereof I aHix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM CLINTON BARNES.
