Description

No. 782,018. PATENTED FEB. 7, 1905.
. A. FARLEY.
WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 4, 1904 UNITED STATES Patented February '7, 190 5.
AMOS FARLEY, OF PITCAIRN, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 782,018, dated February '7, 1905.
Application filed October 4, 1904. Serial No. 227.097.
of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I/Vrenches, of which the following-is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying draw- I lugs.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wrenches, and more particularly to that type commonly known as monkey-wrenches.
The invention has for its object to provide a quick adjustment for wrenches wherein a movable jaw is slidably mounted upon the toothed shank.
Another object of this invention is to con struct a wrench upon as simple lines as possible to maintain a strong and durable wrench, and to this end I have embodied such features of construction that will reduce the expense of manufacture to a minimum.
Briefly described, my improved wrench comprises a toothed shank having an integral jaw or head and a handle. Upon the shank I mount a sliding jaw, which is provided with a spring-pressed tooth that is normally adapted to engage the shank of the wrench, and I provide a novel form of grip in connection with this jaw whereby the same may be quickly and firmly adjusted to any desired position upon the shank.
The above construction will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and referring to the drawings accompanying this application like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a portion of the same, showing the adjustable jaw in vertical section; and Fig. 3 is atransverse sectional view taken on the line :0 a? of Fig. 1.
To put my invention into practice, I employ a shank 1, which is provided with teeth 2 upon its rear edge, and formed integral with the one end of said shank is a fixed head or jaw 3,
5 while upon the other end is detachably secured a handle 1. The adjustable jaw is designated by the reference-numeral 5, and said jaw is cut away, as indicated at 6, forming an opening through which the shank of the wrench passes, and the jaw is further cut away, as indicated at 7, to reduce the weight of the same. Pivoted to the sides of the jaw, as indicated at 8, is a grip 9, this grip being formed substantially U-shaped, and the sides of said grip are sheared away, as indicated at 10, to reduce the weight and expense of manufacture of the same. In the sides of the grip is pivoted by a pin 11 the toothed member 12, and upon the rear face of this member is secured, as indicated at 14:, a spring 15, the lower end of which is adapted to rest against a strap 16, that surrounds the shank 1 and guides the sliding jaw in its movement upon said shank.
The operation of my improved wrench and the manner of quickly adjusting the sliding jaw is as follows: The spring 15 of the grip is adapted to normally hold the toothed member 12 in engagement with the teeth 2 of the shank 1, and to adjust the jaw the grip 9 is grasped and moved downwardly toward the handle. As the grip is pivoted, as indicated at 8, to the sides of the slidingjaw, the downward movement of the grip will cause said grip to swing upon its pivot, which, owing to the toothed member 12 being pivoted in said grip off the center of the pivot of said grip, the toothed member 12 will be carried out of engagement with the teeth of the shank, and as long as the grip is held in this position the jaw may be adjusted upon the shank 1. l/Vhen the grip is released, the spring 15 will return the grip and the toothed member 12 to its normal position in engagement with said shank.
WVhile I have herein shown the preferred manner of constructing my improved wrench, it is obvious that various changes may be made in the details ofconstruction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A wrench comprising a toothed shank having an integral head and a handle, a jaw slidably mounted upon said shank, a grip pivtoothed member mounted in said grip, and a spring carried by said toothed member and bearing against the rear surface of the sliding jaw and adapted to normally hold said member in engagement with said shank, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
