I No. 886,582.
y v Specication of Letters Patent.
ratenfednay 5, 1908.
Application filed September 13, 1907. Serial No. 392,679.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. DAvIEs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rutherford, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Attaching Flexible Material to Rolls. or Drums, of which the following is a specification. v
In some typewritin machines it is customary to attach a strip of cloth to the inking ribbon, roll or drum, and to attach the inking ribbon to such strip by means of a pin, whereby the operators fingers become soiled in'attaching and detaching the inking ribbon, and the pin is more orless objectionable when the ribbon is being used, and in'other rolls and drums on which flexible strips, ribbons or the like are wound it is customary to attach them to the roll or drum by tacks and in other ways.
The object of my invention is to provide improved means for detachably connecting,
flexiblematerial, such as ribbons, strips, and
the like, to'rolls or drums without the'use ofpins or tacks', and whereby the ribbon can be readily attached and detached without unduly handling the same, to the end that the fingers of the operator may be ke' t clean.
' In carrying out my invention provide a roll or drum with a gripper extendingalong the same and movably supported to enabler it to be swung outwardl to permit the inser-v tion and removal of a ri bon or'flexible strlp.
and to be ressed down into contact with the latter for olding the same upon the roll or a roll or drum with a groove or recess in its surface, a gripper to enter said groove, arms pivotally su ported adjacent thev roll and carrying sai gri per, and means for holding said gripper in c osed position, whereby the gripper will engage t e ribbon or flexible strip and hold the same in the groove, and whereby the grip er may lie substantially flush with or witfiini the periphery of the roll or drum to permit proper winding of the ribbon or strip thereon.
The invention also comprises the novel details of improvement and combinations .of
arts that will be more full hereinafter set forth'and then pointed out 1n the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein,
Figure 1 is a face view of a .roll or drum tape or other flexible strip 7. Said In the example illustrated I provide y provided with my improvements, showing the ribbon partly wound thereon, Fig. -2 is Van endv view thereof, Fig. 3 is a cross section,
Figf 4'is`a central section, substantially on I the linen, 4, in Fig. 2, Fig. 5 is a cross section he numeral 1 indicates a suitable shaft substantially on the line'5, 5, in Fig. 1, and
upon which is secured a roll or drum 2 of periphery into which a gripper 6 is ada ted to pass to hold therein the end of rib on, gripper is shown vmounted upon a shaft 8.Wh1chex tends arallel with groove 5- and passes througli).suitable curved slots 9 in the disks or plates 3, and at 10 are arms shownon the exterior of disks 3 and pivotally su ported thereon by screws or studs 11, wherey said arms may swing to carry shaft 8 through `the slots9 toward and from groove 5 for carrying the gripper toward and from the latter.
ShaftS may have finger pieces 8a at its ends `for convenience in swinging the gripper back and forth. The arms 10 are shown provided with angularly disposedend portions at 10a against which sprln'gs 12 bear forpholding said arms in setl position, which springs aresecured to .disk 3 y screws 13 or in any suitable manner, said 'springs being shown located between studs 14' on disks 3 to hold the springs-in operative position. The gripper 6 is shown provided with teeth or lprojections 6 to engage the ribbon or the like 7 when groove 5., and said gripper is shown composed of a piece of` sheet metal suitably bent to form the bearing 6b for shaft 8 and theextension 6C that is adapted to lie upon the roll or drum 2, and the part 6c may enter the recess 21y in the surface of roll 2 'so as to be substantially Hush with the peri hery of the roll and cover the end'of the rib on, and also to extend over Groove 5 so that the ribbon or strip will wind smoothly around the roll.
In using my improvements the gripper is swung ,outwardly to carry it away from' oove 5, then the end yof the yribbon or flexile strip 7 is laid in or over groove 5, the gripper is swung down to enter said groove, an
its teeth 6a engage the ribbon hold roll, and thereby the ribbon is readily detachable from the roll, .and the lingers of the o erator are not liable to be soiled when aping an inking ribbon to or removingl it` Y gom the roll.
While I have referred to my improvements l as being particularly adapted for use in-attaching typewriter inking ribbons to rolls, it Will be understood that my improvements may be used for various purposes whereby flexible strips or sheets are to be connected with a roll or drum to be Wound thereon, and
the arms 1() may be supported upon the roll in any suitable manner.
Having now described my invention what I claim is;
1. The combination of a roll rovided with a groove, with a gri per movsibly connected with the roll an adapted toenter said groove, and a s ring acting on the gripper for holding sai gripper in the groove and for holdin said gripper out of the groove.
2. The com ination of a roll, with a gripper rovided with teeth, arms movably supporting said gripper, and a lpring for holding said gripper against, the ro and away from the roll.
3. The combination of a roll rovided with a groove, and lates at the en s of said roll having slots, wit a shaft passing through said slots and rovided with a grip er,
means for mova ly supporting said 's aft and a spring to,hold said gripper in the groove and out ofthe groove.
4'. The combination of a roll rovided with a groovel and plates atthe en s of said roll having slots with a shaft passing through said slots and provided with a gripper, arms supporting said shaft and. pivotally con'- nected, with the roll, and a spring acting onl sald arms for holding said shaft against the ro 5. The, combination Vof a roll having a' groove, with a gripper having teeth to enter roll provided with slots, with a shaft enter? ing said slots, a gripper mounted upon said shaft and provided with teeth to enter said groove andhaving an extension to overlie the roll, arms movably supporting said roll and means to hold said gripper in the groove.
rovided 7. The combination of a roll with a' groove and plates atthe en( s of the lroll provided with slots, with a shaft enter# ing said slots, a gripper mounted uponsaid shaft and provided with teeth to enterv the groove and having an extension to overlie the roll, arms movably supporting said roll,
anda spring supported by one of said plates and co-aoting-with one olf-'said arms to hold the gripper in the groove.
Signed at New York city, in the county o'l' New York, and State of New York, this 12th day of September, A. D. 1907.
