DEVICE FOR APPLYING DECORATIVE FILMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 474,629, dated May 10, 1892.
Application filed January 6, 1892.

Be it known that I, W'ALTER H. COE, of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Applying Decorative Films; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
rThis invention has reference to improvementsin devices for applying decorative films to suitably-prepared surfaces.
The object of the invention is to produce a device by which strips of ribbons of decorative films may be applied directly from the package to the surface to be decorated.
The invention consists in the peculiar features of construction and combination of novel parts which will hereinafter be more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved device. Fig. 2 represents a top view of the same. Fig. 3 represents an enlarged view of portions of the rolls, showing the manner in which the film and its protective backin g pass from the package-roll to the deliveryroll.
Similar numbers of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.
In the drawings, 5 indicates ahandle which has two forwardly-extending arms 6 6, through the ends of which is secured the shaft 7, one end of which has a screw-head, the other being furnished with a screw-thread to engage a threaded perforation in one of the arms 6 6. On this shaft is journaled the delivery-r0118, located near the center of the shaft by sleeves or washers placed on said shaft between the sides of the roll and the arms in which the shaft is secured. At the portion of the han- (lle 5 from which the arms extend are located the studs 9 9 and the bent spring 10. Between the studs 9 9 is pivoted the shank 11 of a frame, having two arms 12 12, the rear end of this shank resting on and being slightly Serial No- AI'LZM. (No model.)
raised by the end of the spring 10, and through the ends of the arms 12 12 extends a screwshaft 13, on which are carried the rotatable disks 1 1 14. Between these disks is a package-roll 15, also rotatable on the shaft 13. This roll 15 may form' part of a package of films, or the films 16 and their protective backing 17 may be wound on this roll from a suitable package, the outer end of the protecting-strip 17 being glued to the delivery-r0118. Suitable sleeves or washers 18 are also placed between the disks letllet and the arms 12 12, these being. varied in thickness to accommodate package-rolls of various lengths between the disks.
The operation of the device is extremely simple. As the delivery-roll passes over the surface to be decorated the protective backing 17 will be drawn onto said roll and will carry the films withit until the prepared surface is reached, the film adhering to this surface and being pressed down on the same by the delivery-roll. No strain is brought on the film at any point, yet it is kept in a smooth condition.
When the device is to be used for outdoor work, a hood is placed over the rolls to protect the film from disturbance by the wind.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The combination, with the handle 5, having the arms 6 6 and provided with the studs 9 9 and spring 10, and the delivery-roll 8, journaled on a shaft secured in the ends of said arms, of the shank 11, pivoted between the studs 9 9 and resting on said spring, the package-roll 15, journaled on a shaft secured in the ends of said arms, and the disks 14 14,independently rotatable on said shaft, as described.
