BUNG-CLOSURE FOR BARRELS.

Be it known that I, O'r'ro ANDREAs IIIL- GERMANN, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Rhinelander, in the county of Oneida and State of l/Visconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bling-Closures for Barrels, of which the following is a complete specication.
This invention relates to improvements in bung closures for barrels and more particularly to a bung closure of that class employed for beer barrels.
In drawing olii' beer it is customary to insert a pipe through the bung of the barrel for the escape of the `beer and to admit carbonic acid gas into the barrel, through a closure around the ipe, which acts to force the beer outwardly tirough said pipe. The connection for the carbonic acid gas is usually engaged in the bung and the outlet pipe is inserted therethrough and it is difficult to provide a tight joint between the closure and the bung so as to prevent the escape of the beer' therepast.
The object of this invention is to provide a connection which will afford a very tight closure for the barrel and which will have such a firm grip in the bung that it will be held in such rigid position as to prevent its swaying from side to side and causing an opening between it and the bung for the escape of the beer.
The invention consists of the matters hereinafter described and more fully pointed out and dened in the appended claims.

As shown in said drawings: A indicates the barrel having in the head a thereof a bung af, which as shown is provided with an axial bore a2, which is enlarged in its upper or outer end to provide a chamber a3 for the closure. rThe outlet pipe Bfor the beer leads downwardly through said bore to near the bottom of the barrel, but is of less diameter than said bore so as to provide a passage about it for the admission of the carbonic acid gas into the barrel.
The closure comprises a tubular member C about the pipe B, and the lower portion c of which extends into the chamber a3. The upper end c of said member is externally Specification of Letters Patent.

A cap c4 has threaded engagement on the end o of the member C, and acts to force the follower onto the gasket and form a tight joint about the pi e.v The member C is provided with a laterally extending tubular extension ci in which is connected the inlet valve D, of any preferred construction, for the carbonic acid gas.
Slidably engaged on the lower portion c of said member C is the compression sleeve E which extends a short distance into the chamber a3 and has the lower end thereof beveled from its inner side downwardly and outwardly. A slight distance above the bung said compression sleeve is provided with a peripheral flange e, beneath which and resting on the bung is a packing ring e.' On the lower end of said portion c is rigidly engaged a collar e2 having its upper edge beveled from its inner side upwardly and outwardly and between which and the lower end of the sleeve E are two packing rings eL-e3, which are separated by a movable collar e4 having both edges beveled. Said portions c is screw threaded at c above the sleeve E and is provided with a nut F, having arms f, for operating the same. Said nut acts to force the compression sleeve down onto the packing rings and form a tight joint between the portion c and the walls of the chamber a8 in the bung. For the purpose of holding the sleeve from rotation and thereby preventing its cutting or tearing the packing rings, it is pro vided in one side with a longitudinal slot e5 through which extends a pin eG rigidly engaged in the portion c.
When Vin operation the end of the portion c and the packing rings thereon is forced into the chamber in the bung and the compression sleeve E is forced down onto the rings by means of the nut E. In as much as the sleeve cannot rotate it forces the rings down evenly on all sides without tearing or cutting them, and inasmuch as the rings ef and {a3- e3 afford three points of contact on the bung, the closure is held very rigidly, and all tendency to swing laterally is overcome. The carbonic acid gas enters the barrel through the tubular member C around the pipe B and by causing pressure on the liquid forces it out through said pipe.
Obviously a closure constructed in accordance with my invention affords a very tight j oint in the bung and prevents the escape of beer except through the proper channel, and obviously also many details of construction may be varied without departing'from the principles of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a device of the class described the combination with a bung having a chamber therein, of a tubular member extending inten said chamber, packing rings on the inner end of said member, a movable collar separating said rings, a sleeve slidably engaged on said member, a nut adapted to force said sleeve downwardly onto said rings and means adapted to' hold the sleeve from rotation.

In a device of the class described the combination with a bung having a chamber therein, of a tubular member extending into said chamber, a collar rigidly engaged on the inner end of said member, a slotted sleeve vslidably engaged on said member, packing rings on said member between the collar and sleeve, a movable collar between said rings, a pin in said member extending through the` slot in said sleeve and means for forcing the sleeve into engagement with said rings.
3. In a device of the class described the combination with a bung having a chamber therein, of a tubular member extending into said chamber, a pipe extending axially through said member, means affording a tight joint between the outer end of said member and the pipe, a collar rigidlyengaged on the inner end of said member, a flanged compression, sleeve slidably engaged on the inner end of said member and having a slot in one side thereof, packing rings on said member between the sleeve and collar, a movable collar therebetween, a packing ring between the flange on said sleeve and said bung, a nut having threaded engagement on said member and adapted to force the sleeve into the bung and compress said rings and means engaged in said slot adapted to hold the sleeve from rotation.
