Description

. No. 884,780 PATENTED APR. 14, 1908.
W. C. TURPEL.
HEEL FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 21, 1907.
Wil'uczaaa I A dliozuu WALTER C. TURPEL, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
HEEL FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 14, 1908,,
Application filed September 21, 1907. Serial No. 393,954.
To all 14271 em it may concern: I 1
Be it known that I, WALTER C. TURPEL, a' l citizen of the United States, residing at New 2 Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Heels for Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to heels for boots and shoes; and it has for its objects to provide a heel having a inovabl'y supported top lift different portions of which will he suc (-essively exposed to wear, thereby increasing the life of the heel and maintaining the latter. straight and level with little or no tendency to run down at the side owing to unequal wear upon the different parts.
Another object is to construct a heel of the ch'aracte' described including a rubber or other resilient portion and an air cushion which will take up the jar shock caused by placing the heel on the ground, in walking, tlfus rendering the use of the shoe equipped with the improved heel easy and comfortable for the wearer. 1
Further objects are to simplif andimprove the construction of this 0 ass of. devices.
With these and other ends in View which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same coin sists in the improved construction and novel arrangement .and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention; it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention may be resorted to when desired.
in the drawing, Figure l is a side elevation of a shoe 'quippedwith the heel constructed in accordance with the invention, the heel being shown in vertical section. p an view of the underside of the heel. Fig.3 is a plan vicwof the rotary top lift. Fig. 4 is a detail plan View of the Inctallic washer connected with and supporting the rotary top lift.
tlorresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
In its preferred form, the improved heel 'dered easy an comfortable.
includes a cushion 1 of rubber or other suitprescnce of the rubber cushion.
centric therewith, is formed another and relatively shallow, recess 4 constituting. a seat for the circular top lift 5 which is preferably made of leather, and provided with a central aperture 6 for the accommodation of the head of the screw or fastening member 7 which extends through the cushion 1 and into the foundation formed by the lifts 22. Securely attached upon the underside of the top lift '5 is a washer consistin of a plate 8 of steel or other suitable materia having an aperture 9 for the passage of the shank of a screw or fastening member, the head of which engages the outer side of the washer 8,
and serves to secure the washer and the top lift in position, revoluble.
in practice, the cushion 1 servesthe purpose of the ordinary rubber heel, but its efficiency is greatly increased by the presence of the air chamber 3 which is closed by the rotary lift composed of the leather disk 5 and the washer 8; it being obvious that when the foot is set upon the ground, in walking, the air contained in the recess 3 will be compressed and vform' a cushion whereby the jarring will be revented and walking renthe heel is set upon the ground, there will be a tendency to displace the top lift which will result in the partial rotation of said top lift so that, at each step, a different portion of said top lift will be ex oscd to Wear; the
natural consequence'of t is is, that the wear will be equally distributed, and there will be little tendency for the heel to become run down at the side; the heel will thus not only be retained in a neatly appearing and level condition, but its life will be greatly increased Every time since all portions of the top lift ill be gradually and evenlyworn. The has of thefastening member 7 is countersunk in tho-top lift, and no nail heads or other metallic ortions will be exposed; hence there will e little tendency to slipping, any tendency in this direction being also counteracted by the The construction simple and inexpen-- SLVO, and the device is thoroughly efficient for the purposes for which it is provided.
Having thusfully described the invention, 1
what is claimed as new is l. in a heel, aresilient or compressible neinber having a recess eonstitutin 'an air 't-hainber, and a top lift supported for rotation adjaeent to said air chamber and constituting a closure therefor.
2. In a heel, a resilient or compressible member having a recess constituting an air chamber, and a shallower recess adjacent to f and eoneentrie therewith, in combination a top lift supported for rotation adjaeent to the air (liltlllbtl and eonstituting a closure with a top lift seated lCYOltlbl) in the shallift having a head countersunk therein and a. shank extending through the cushion member into the foundation of the heel.
4. In a heel, a foundation, a cushion seeured upon the foundation and having a re- ('ess constituting an air chamber, and a shallower recess concentric therewith, a leather top lift seated in the shallower recess and having a central aperture, :1 metal Washer secured upon the underside of the top lift, and a headed fastening member extending through the washer, the air chamber and the cushion into the foui'nlation of the heel, the head of said fastening member being accomnnnfated in the central aperture of the top lift.
therefor and a fastening member for said top 1 lntestiniony whereof I affix my signature in presenre of two witnesses.
\Yilfllill C. TURPEL.
