HENDERSON E. W. LOOMIS, OF DUMONT, IOWA.
APPARATUS FOR SHARPENING LAWN-MOWERS.
' specicauon of Letters Patent,
Patented April 14, 1908. l
Application `filed October 24, 1907. Serial No. 398,985
sharpening lawn-mowers and more. particu-1 larly to a driving device for rotating the cutting'blades of the mower when sharpening the same.
The object of the invention is to provide a com aratively simple and inexpensive de' vice 'o the character described especially designed for attachment to one of the traction Wheels of a mower and by means of which the cutting blades may be readily sharpened' Without the necessity of detaching the individual blades.
A further object is to provide a driving device including an expansible clam ing member or strap capable of being quick y attached to or removed from the traction Wheel of a mower and which may be readily adjusted to fit traction Wheels of different sizes.
A still further object of the invention is to generally im rove this class of devices so as eir utility, durability and eniciency. l Further objects and advantages will appear in. the' following description, it being understood that various changes in form7 proportions and minor details of construe tion may be resorted to Within the scope of the ap ended claims'.
I-n t e accompanying drawings forming a A part of this specicaticn: Figure 1 is a side ing device detached.
elevation of a lawn-rnower provided with a driving device constructed. in accordance 'with my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view oi' a portion of the driv Fie. 3 is a top plan view of the clamping ne overlappen a detail perspective view ci portions ot the clamping Similar numerals of corresponding parts in all ofthe the drawings.
The improved driving device -orn'iing the Subject `matter of the present invention is principallyT designed for attachment to the traction Wheel of a lawn-mower and by Way of illustration is shown in position on-.a lawn-mower of the ordinary construction 1n which 5 designates one ofthe traction wheels, 6 the rotary cutting blades and 7 the handle.
The attachment consists of spacedb'rackverse bar 1g which forms a su port for' the adjacent portion of the clamping band v10,v the end of the band l() at the bar 12 being bent upon itself and the terminals thereof provided with laterally extending ears 13 which bear against the body of the strap and serve to prevent slipping of the same'. The bracket 9 is also provided with an elongated slot or opening la the end wall of which engages the opposite end of the strap or band. T he metal orming the strap or band is bent upon itself at the end wall of'the slot 14 and the terminal bent to produce laterally extending ears 15 similar in construction to the ears 13. Engaging the strap between the ears l5 and the bracket 9 1s a buckle 16 having an intermediate transverse bar 17 andiover which is assed the superposed layers of the strap. l)t will thus be seen that by drawing the strap through the buckle 16 said strap may be adjustedto fit traction wheels of different sizes. lt will also be noted that the lower face of the brackets 8 and 9 as well as the lower vface of the buckle 8 are formed with seating recesses or depressions 18 for the reception ci the strap or band so as to permit the strap or band to snugly engage the peripheral edge of the mower wheel.
The bracket S nient 19 having a longitudinal bore or open- `ing 2() formed. therein for the reception oi a bolt i one end of which extends through the perforated lug .22 on the bracket il, while ve es ite end thereot1 is provided with a :'33, there being a spring infeen the lug 22 and the enlargci9 tor expanding the band when the 2 1 is released. The. enlargement 19 is bolt ` formed with a terminal shoulder. 25 lwhich engages the nut 23, .the latter being preferably curved to 'conform-'to the shape of the enlargehientand provided with an extended li 26 Which bears against the base of the brac et 8 and serves to lock said nut against accidental rotation.
is formed with an enlarge' Extending laterally from the bracket 8 is an integral pin or stud upon which is mounted for rotation an operating handle 27 and by means of which the clamping band together with the traction wheel may be rotated when sharpening the cutting blades 6.
In operation the clamping band is adjusted to fit the traction Wheel of the mower to be sharpened and said band placed in position on the peripheral edge of the traction wheel and clamped in position thereon by adjusting the bolt 21. The handle27 is then rotated which revolvesthe Wheel together with the cutting blades 6 so that the latter are successively brought in contact with the sharpening device, a conventional form of which is indicated at 28.
In order to remove the clamping band it is merely necessary to adjust the bolt 21 longitudinally when the spring 24 Will separate the brackets 8 and 9 and permit the clamping band to be readily detached from the traction wheel of the mower.
From the foregoing description it will be. seen that there is provided an extremely simple, inexpensive and eflicient device admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
y1. An attachment for lawn-mowers co1nprising spaced brackets one of which is provided wlth a perforated lug and the other with' an enlargement .forming a shoulder, there being a longitudinal bore formed in the enlargement and piercing the stop shoulder, a clamping band engaging the brackets and adapted to engage the traction wheel of the lawn mower, a bolt extended through Vthe perforation in the lug and the bore of the enlargement and provided with terminal threads, a nut threaded on the bolt and bearing against the shoulder, a spring surrounding the bolt and interposed between the lug and enlargement, and an operating handle extending laterally from one of the brackets.
2. An attachment for lawn-mowers comprising" spaced brackets havingtheir lower faces formed with seating recesses-,\.an adjustable clamping band engaging the opposite ends of the brackets and seated in said recesses, said band being adapted to engage 'the traction wheel ot' the lawn-mower, a buckle carried by the band and provided with seating recesses for the reception of the band, and means connectingl the brackets for clamping the band in engagement with the traction wheel.
3. An attachment for lawnfmowers comprising spaced brackets, an adjustable clamp- .ing band having one end thereof secured to the adjacent bracket and its terminal porf tion provided with laterally extending ears folded laterally on said band, the opposite end of the bandl being secured to the mating bracket and provided with' similar ears, a buckle carried by the band for locking the latter in adjusted position, means connecting the brackets for clamping the band in position on the traction wheel of the mower, and a handle extending laterally from one of said brackets.
, In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, l have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
