ELMER PAYNE, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
BRlDLE-BIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,333, dated April 18, 1899.
Application filed December 15, 1898. Serial No. 699,367. (No model.)
To all whont it may concern..-
Be it known that I, ELMER PAYNE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, in the borough of Manhattan and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bridle-Bits, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved bridle-bit by which the chafing of the mouth of the horse or other irritation to the same is avoided, while the full freedom of the reins and control of the bit in the month are secured.
The invention consists of the combination, with a tubular mouthpiece having end disks provided with slots for attachment of the bridle-straps, of a rein-bar guided in said mouthpiece and provided at its ends with means for attaching the reins, and, further, in certain details of construction and combinations of parts, to be more fully described hereinafterand finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved bridle-bit shown as applied to a horses head and connected with the headstall and reins. Fig. 2 isa front elevation of my improved bridle-bit. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 41s avertical transverse section on line at 4, Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the bridle-bit.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a tubular mouthpiece, which is made long enough to fit easily into the mouth of the horse. To the ends of the tubular mouthpiece A are applied disks B B, which are provided with arc-shaped slots Z? Z) for attaching the bridle'staps S, as shown in Fig. 1. Through the tubular mouthpiece A extends a reinbar 0, which is composed of a tubular main portion that is guided by a slot (31 on a stopscrew (1 fixed in the tubular mouthpiece A, so that the rein-bar is prevented from turning axially, but permitted to slide freely in lateral direction. At the ends of the rein-bar C are arranged eyes 0, the threaded shanks c of which are screwed into the interiorlythreaded ends of the tubular rein-bar C, so that a firm connection between the rein-bar and the eyes is established. The eyes 0' carry the rings D, to which the reins D are applied.
My improved bridle-bit has the advantage that the tubular mouthpiece is retained in the mouth of the horse without changing its position therein laterally, so as to prevent chafing and other irritation to the horse, while simultaneously the rein-bar has a free play in. lateral direction, so as to follow the varying tension of the reins, so that the horse is thereby always under full control of the reins without causing any injury or irritation to his mouth.' As the horse bites the mouthpiece, which forms a protecting-sleeve for the reinbar, it can neverinterfere with the motion of the rein-bar, which by its being guided in the mouthpiece will always in a reliable manner perform its function under the tension of the reins, so that a very satisfactory bit for driving and ordinary road horses is obtained.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a tubular mouthpiece having end disks provided with slots for attachment of the bridle-straps, of a rein-bar guided in said mouthpiece and provided at its ends with means for attaching the reins, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a tubular monthpiece, and means for attaching the bridlestraps thereto, of a rein-bar extending through the tubular mouthpiece, means in said tubu- -lar mouthpiece for guiding the rein-bar therein, eyes at the ends of said rein-bar, and rings carried by said eyes for attaching the reins, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a tubular mouthpiece, and means for attaching the bridlestraps thereto, of atubular rein-bar extend-' ing through the tubular mouthpiece and provided with a longitudinal slot, means for attaching the reins to said rein-bar, and a projection on the mouthpiece entering the slot of the rein-bar, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ELMER PAYNE.
