PAPER-HANGING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 1'7, 1908.
Application filed October 8, 1907. Serial No. 396.483.
Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Hanging Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention has reference to paper hanging devices, and it aims, generally, to provide an exceedingly simple and inexpensive implement designed for supporting one end of a roll of wall paper in place against the ceiling of the room'to be papered thus dispensing with the services of the second workman whom it has been necessary heretofore to employ for this purpose, in addition to the one actually engaged in the pasting operation.
More particularly, the invention resides in the specific construction of the clamping head of the attaching block, the head engaging the roll end while the block is bolted or otherwise secured to one of the ladders upon which the trestle is mounted and carries the pole to which the head is fastened.
The invention will be readily understood from a consideration of the following detailed description and its preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like parts are designated by corresponding reference numerals, in the several views.
Of the said drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device attached to a ladder, the usual trestle being likewise shown. Fig. 2 is a view at right angles to Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical sections through the entire device at right angles to each other.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates a step ladder of any ordinary type to one of the legs 6 of which the paper hanging attachment, generally designated 7, is bolted or otherwise removably secured, the ladder being located against one of the walls of the room to be papered and forming a support for one end of the trestle upon which the workman stands in applying the paper to the ceiling of the room. The paper holding device 7 consists primarily of'a supporting block 9 and a pole 10, and a clamping head 11, the pole being provided at its lower end with a threaded pin 12 adapted for engagement in a socket plate 13 set into the upper face of the supporting block. The clamping head consists of upper and lower members 14 and 15 connected together by threaded bolts 16 which extend l through registering openings formed in said members and are secured at their upper ends to or formed upon plates 17 bolted to the upper face of the upper member 14, the lower ends of said bolts extendingbeneath thelower member 15 and being provided at such point with nuts 18. The lower member 15 is in addition, provided centrally with a depending shoulder 19 carrying a U-shaped strap 20 upon the bight portion of which is formed a finger or stem 21, adapted for rotatable engagement in the socketed upper end of the pole 10.
The supporting block by which the pole is carried is provided upon its opposite side faces with imvardly-tapered vertical seats 22 in which the legs of the latter are adapted to be received according as the block is secured to one side bar or the other, the tapered formatirm of these seats offsetting the divergence of the ladder legs and disposing the pole in. a vertical position.
In the operation of the device, the roll of wall paper is clamped adjacent to one end thereof between. the members of the head 11, whereupon its coated inner face will be held against the ceiling: the paper hanger, who, in the mean time, has mounted the trestle, grasps the roll of paper and applies the same to the ceiling by hohling it thereagainst, the paper becoming unrolled as he walks to the opposite end of the trestle to that atwhich the ladder is stationed, the paper being severed when the opposite wall is reached.
hat is claimed is 1. A. paper hanging attachment for step ed to be secured to one of the legs of the ladder and provided with a socketed upper face; a vertical pole having its lower end fitted. in the socket in said block; and a head rotatably connected to the upper end of said pole and including a pair of clamping members adapted to engage one end of a roll of wall paper, to hold said end against the ceiling of a room.
2. A paper hanging attachment for step ladders comprising a supporting block ad apted to be secured to one of the legs of the ladder and provided with a socketed upper ladders com )risin a su )ortin block ada tfitted in the socket in said block and having a socket formed in its upper end; a clamping member provided centrally with a depending shoulder having a stem rotatably engaged in the pole socket; a clamping member mounted upon the first-mentioned clamping member, said clamping members being adapted to receive one end of a roll of Wall paper therebetween. to hold the same against the ceiling of a room, and means for holding said members in contact with each other.
3. A paper hanging attachment for step ladders comprising a supporting block adapted to be securedto the legs of the ladder; a
the latter being provided at each side with an inwardly-tapered vertical seat in which the side bar is adapted to be received; and a head rotatably connected to the upper end of said pole and including a pair of clamping members adapted to engage one end of a roll of Wall paper, to hold the same against the ceiling of a room.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
