Be it known that I, SILAS S. RICHARDSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montague, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scaffold-Brackets and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has relation to new and useful improvements in scaffold brackets, and has for its object to provide a bracket of simple and durable construction which may be quickly and easily applied to a building or upright, and when detached therefrom, may be folded in a compact parcel for the purposes of transportation or storage.

Inthe accompanying drawings, in which like parts are designated by like characters throughout the several vie\\'s,Figure 1 is a side elevation of the bracket as arranged when in use; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the bracket detached from the building and folded up whenaiot in use; Fig. 3 is a front elevation.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents a building.

2 is the stand of the bracket, which is placed in contact with a building or upright.

3 is a bearer, which is connected with the upper end of the stand, at its inner end, by

iron straps 4, on each side, said straps being bolted rigidly to each part, so as to turn on the bolts or rivets and form a joint.

The numeral 5 represents the brace, which is stepped at its upper end in a corresponding mortise in the under edge and near the outer end of said bearer, and connected with said bearer by curved straps 6, arranged on opposite sides of said brace, and pivoted near their upper ends by a bolt, or other suitable means, to said bearer. In the application of my invention, the lower end of said brace fits in a corresponding mortise, near the lower end and in the outer edge of said stand, and is held removably and securely in position by means of a strap 7 of preferably U-shaped form, hinged near its ends to the sides of said stand. Said bracket, when in use, is secured to the side of a building or an upright by means of a screw bolt 8, which works through a perforation near the upper end of said stand and through a corresponding aperture in the side of said building or upright, and has working on its threaded end, a lock nut 9, which is screwed up thereon until in engagement with the rear-side of said upright.

A metallic plate 10, having a perforation to correspond with the body of said bolt, is fastened in any desired manner to the outer edge and over the upper end of said stand, and serves to strengthen the upper end thereof, and as a bearing for the head of said bolt to work against.

hen my improved bracket is not in use, it may be folded very compactly, by lifting the lower end of said brace 5 from engagement with said U-shaped strap 7, when the outer end of said bearer may he swung inwardly until against said stand, and the lower end of said brace swung upwardly until in engagement with said bearer.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of my invention.

Ilaving described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A bracket embracing a stand having a mortise near its lower end, a bearer resting near one end upon the upper end of said stand, diagonal opposite link -plates arranged laterally ol', and having their ends pivoted to said stand and said bearer, respectively, and an oblique brace having secured laterally thereto, at its upper end, opposed spaced apart extension-plates receiving, and having pivoted between and to them the outer end of said bearer, a stirrup pivoted to said stand and arranged to stand opposite the mortise in the latter and adapted to aid the retention of said brace in said mortise as set forth, and a mortise on the lower side of and intmfmediate the pivot points of said bearer, said extension plates rigidly extending outwardly at an angle from said oblique brace, whereby said extension plates will occupy a horizontal position, and the upper end of said oblique brace will be held In testimony whereof I have hereunto set in the mortise of said bearer when the bracket my hand in presence of two subscrlbing witis in use and whereby said oblique brace will when it is folded be constrained to move nesses.
