Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JULIEN GUENIFFET, ANATOLE BENOIT, and hurts NICAULT, all citizens of the Republic of France, and residing in Paris, France, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette Tubes or Mouthpieces, of which the following is a specification.
The present application is a division of ourv prior application Serial No. 59,47 6, filed May 9, 1901, and aims to cover a product of the machine claimed in said application.
The mouthpiece has located in the interior a diaphragm formed of a series of inwardly projecting tongues (preferably pointed) arranged to prevent the tobacco from passing into the mouthpiece.
The accompanying drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 1 is a plan of a sheet of paper or pasteboard or similar material from which the mouthpiece may be formed. Fig. 2 is a section of the same with the tongues turned up. Fig. 3 is an oblique view of a complete tube with the mouthpiece in place.
Referring to the embodiment illustrated, a strip of paper or the like is cut into pieces A, the edge of which is formed with pointed tongues B extending along a part of its length. The tongues B are then bent down to the position of Fig. 2. The piece of paper A is then rolled to form a spiral tube A into which the tongues B project. The tongues are near the inner end and so prevent the tobacco from passing into the mouthpiece, while permitting the passage of smoke.
A tobacco-holding shell C of any sort has the mouthpiece A inserted into its end. The mouthpiece may be rolled tightly to a suflicient diameter to permit its introduction into the end of the shell 0. Being then released, it spreads open sufficiently to hold itself in place.
What we claim is 1. A cigarette mouthpiece having a diaphragm formed of a series of tongues bent inward toward the center from the surround ing portion of the mouthpiece.
2. A cigarette tube provided with a mouthpiece inserted within the same, said mouthpiece having a diaphragm formed of a series of tongues bent inward from the sur-- rounding portion of the mouthpiece.
3. A cigarette tube provided with a mouthpiece and having located in the interior thereof a series of inwardly-projecting pointed tongues arranged to prevent the tobacco from passing into the mouthpiece.
