One object of this invention is to provide an improved, simple and inexpensive meritorious connection between the vertical swinging platform of the sewing-machine table or cabinet and the cover-forming leaf hinged to the left-hand. end of the top of the table or cabinet.

Another object is to provide meritorious means whereby the narrow leaf hinged to and extending longitudinally of the platform is properly guided during the actuation of the platform.

With these objects in view, and to the end of realizing other advantages hereinafter appearing, this invention consists in certain features of construction, and combinations of parts, hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan of the sewing-machine table or cabinet. In this figure the platform is shown in its upwardly swung and horizontal Fig. 2 is a front side elevation of the upper portion of the table or cabinet. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 33, Fig. 2,

Referring to the drawings, A indicates the top of a sewing-machine table or cabinet, which top is provided centrally with an opening a extending vertically through the top. The opening a is rectangular or oblong and arranged longitudinally of the top A. The opening a is large enough in d1 mensions to accommodate the reception thereby of a platform B and a leaf D hinged to and arranged rearwardly of the said platform.

The platform B is hinged or pivoted at its side edges in suitable proximity to the forward edge of the platform, as at b, to the side walls of the opening a horizontally and longitudinally of the platform to render the platform capable of swinging downwardly from within the opening or upwardly into the opening. The leaf D is hinged, as at d, to the platform B at the rear edge and top of the platform horizontally and longitudinally of the platform. The axis of the hinge connection between the leaf D and the plat form B and the axis of the pivotal connection between the platform and the table-top A are parallel.

The platform B is designed to bear the sewing-machine head (not shown) and is known in the art as the load-bearing leaf or platform, and the said head is usually of such dimensions that it will not swing through an opening which is not larger than the said platform, and the platform B, if it were made large enough to occupy an opening of the size necessary to accommodate the passage of the sewing-machine head therethrough, would in swinging from its horizontal and opening-closing position into its downwardly swung or depending position strike the fly-wheel (not shown) of the sewing-machine. Consequently the opening a is made large enough to accommodate the swinging of the sewing-machine-head through the said opening, the platform B is adapted to only partially close the opening, and the leaf D is employed to complete the closure of the opening rearwardly of the platform in the opening-closing position of the platform.

A cover-forming leaf H is hinged, as at h, to the table-top A at the upper surface and left hand edge of the said top horizontally and transversely of the table at a right angle to the axis of the platform B and is employed in lifting the platform from its lower or depending position into its horizontal and opening-closing position. The rear portion of the leaf H is provided at its outer side with cabinet-work C forming compartments, which cabinet-work depends from the leaf when the leaf is in line with the table-top A in the upwardly swung and horizontal position of the platform. That is, the leaf H covers the opening a in the table-top A or projects laterally of the left-hand edge ofand is arranged in line with the table-top A according as the platform B is in its lower or depending position or in its upwardly swung and horizontal position. The leaf H forms a table in its open position and in its closed position forms a desk.

The stationary portion of the sewingmachine table or cabinet (see Figs. 1 and 2) is provided at its left-hand side and upper end and externally with a laterally projecting arm G which is arranged to be engaged by the cabinet-work C of the leaf H in the open position of the said leaf and forms a stop to prevent the said cabinet-work from swinging downwardly out of line with the table-top A in the open position of the leaf H and braces the said cabinet-work and consequently the said leaf from the stationary portion of the sewing-machine table or cabinet in the said position of the said leaf.

An improved operative connection between the leaf H and the platform B is provided and comprises a strap I which is pivoted, as at I, to the leaf H a suitable distance from the hinged end of the said leaf, and the pivotal connection between the said strap and the leaf is arranged with its axis parallel with the axis of the said leaf. The strap I (see Fig. 1) is arranged to extend within and along a recess H with which the leaf H is provided a suitable distance from the rear edge of the said leaf, which recess is arranged longitudinally of the said leaf and forwardly of the rear wall of the opening a in the tabletop A. I

The strap I extends from the leaf H inwardly and longitudinally of the table-top A and into the opening a of the said top in close proximity to and along the rear wall of the said opening a suitable distance, and the table-top A is recessed in its upper side, as at A, (see Fig. 1) to accommodate the location of the said strap. The strap I leads to and over a guide-sheave 10 which is arranged vertically and longitudinally of the table or cabinet next forwardly of the rear wall of the opening a and is supported in any approved manner from a bracket 12 which is secured to the under side of the table-top A, and the leaf D is slotted or cut away at its free longi tudinal edge, as at D, to accomodate the location and operation of the strap I and the sheave 10. The bracket 12 (see Figs. 4 and .5) is provided with a strap-guiding arm 13 which projects downwardly and forwardly below the sheave 10.

The strap I leads from the sheave 10 downwardly and forwardly and is operatively connected with the platform B The operative connection between the strap I and the platform B comprises a bracket J which is rigidly secured to the rear portion of the platform between the central portion and lefthand end of the platform. The bracket J extends also in under the leaf or platform-extension D.

An arm L (see Figs. 3 and 4) is pivoted horizontally to the bracket J near the rear and free end of the bracket and in the horizontal or upwardly swung position of the platform projects somewhat downwardly and forwardly from the bracket. The pivotal connection between the arm L and the bracket J comprises preferably'a pin Z which is arranged horizontally and parallel with the axis of the platform B. The arm L is provided (see Fig. 3) between its axis and its free end with a lug 15 which is arranged to project forwardly in the upwardly swung and opening-closing position of the platform. The lug 15 is provided with a laterally projecting pin or member 16 engaged at its under side by a spring 3 which is supported ranged alongside and longitudinally of the bracket J in the downwardly swung or depending position of the platform as shown in Fig 4. The strap I is pivotally connected to the arm L near the free end of the arm and the axis or pivotal connection between the said strap and the said arm is arranged parallel with the axis of the arm. Preferably the strap I is fastened to a short arm 17 which is arranged longitudinally of the arm L and pivoted by a pin 18 to the arm, which pin is arranged. horizontally and parallel with the axis of the arm. The arrangement of the parts is such that the armL is adapted to swing downwardly against the action of the spring 3. The arm L in its downwardly swung position abuts (see Fig. 3) against a laterally projecting lug 20 formed on the bracket J, which lug 20 is arranged to form a stop for limiting the swinging of the said arm.

The arm J is also provided with a guide sheave 22 for the strap I, which sheave is preferably mounted on the pin Z.

The stationary portion of the sewing-machine table or cabinet is provided next below the rear portion of the top A with a wooden back K. I

By the construction and arrangement of parts of the means employed in establishing operative connection between the strap I and the platform B it will be observed that the platform lowers by gravity during the swinging of the cover-forming leaf H over the opening a; that the strap comes into engagement with the sheave 22 when the arm L is actuated by the spring .9 into position alongside of thesaid bracket, as shown in Fig. 4; that when the platform is in its downwardly swung or depending position the leaf H rests upon the table-to A and covers the opening a as shown in Fig. 4; that the platform is swung upwardly into its opening-closing position, as shown in Fig. 3, during the actuation of the leaf H to uncover the opening a;

that the strap I is guided by the arm 13 of the bracket 12 during the actuation of thetion of the leaf H to uncover the opening a and against the action of the spring .9 until thearmcomes into contact with the stopforming lug or member 20 whereupon the platform B is actuated into its horizontal and opening-closing position. It will be ob served therefore that by my improved construction the arm L is out of the way in the downwardly swung position of the latform, nor does the bracket J nor the arm project into objectionable proximity to the back K in the horizontal and opening-closing position of the platform. The parts comprising the operative connection between the strap I and the platform B are practically and conveniently arranged and are not in the way of other parts of the sewing-machine table or cabinet.

The sewing rfiachine table or cabinet comprises two stationary wooden side pieces or walls R and R arranged vertically at opposite sides respectively of the sweep of the platform B and the connected leaf D. The said side walls extend from the back K for wardly to the front of the sewing-machine table or cabinet. One of the side walls R is provided near its lower edge with a block Q which is glued or otherwise fastened to the said wall and arranged to limit the movement of the platform B when the said platform swings downwardly from its opening-closing position into its depending position.

The left-hand side wall R is provided with an inclined bar 1 which extends from adj acent the upper end of the sweep or travel of the leaf D and a short distance forwardly of the rear wall of the opening a at the bottom of the said opening downwardly and forwardly a suitable distance. The bar r is glued or otherwise fastened to the respective wall R and (see Figs. 1, 3 and 4) is provided in its face with a groove 1" which extends from end to end of the bar and is open at least at the upper end of the bar. The lefthand and bar-bearing side wall R is arranged far enough from the sweep of the platform B to accommodate the location of the bar 1' between the said sweep and the said wall and the table-top A is provided, in the left-hand side wall of its opening a, with a straight groove (1 which communicates and is arranged exactly in line with and forms an upward extension of the groove 1". The groove a therefore extends upwardly and rearwardly from the groove r.

The leaf D is provided, at its left-handend, with a cylindrical pin (1 which is inserted within and projects from the left-hand edge of the said leaf near the free longitudinal edge of the leaf. The pin (1 is arranged to travel along and within the grooves r and a during the movement of the platform B. The arrangement of the parts is such that when the platform B is in its horizontal and openingclosing position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the pin d engages the upper end of the groove a, and the said leaf is swung upwardly during the swinging of the platform B downwardly, and projects upwardly from the said platform in the depending position of the platform, as shown in Fig. 4, and is held in the said upwardly swung position of the platform by the engagement of the pin (1 with the groove 1*. It will be observed that the provision of the grooved bar 1 is inexpensive and convenient in the manufacture and assemblage of the parts, that the said groove in the bar 1" and the groove a form a straight way extending from a point at one side of the upper end of the travel or sweep of the leaf D downwardly and. in the direction in which the platform B swings during the lowering of the platform; that opposite side walls of the said way limit the swinging of the leaf D in opposite directions respectively independently of the platform, and that the side wall of the said way which limits the swinging of the leaf D in the direction ofthe upper side of the platform B positively insures the swinging of the said leaf into line horizontally with the platform B upon actuating the platform from its depending position into its opening-closing and horizontal position.

The provision and relative arrangement of the parts L, Z, s, 15, 16, 17, 18, 20 and 22 is important to facilitate the operation of the parts during the movement of the platform B through the medium of strap I and leaf H and yet avoid bending of the strap I at an objectionably sharp angle, such, for instance, as a right angle or nearly so. It is desirable however to have the arm L out of the way so as not to project far enough forwardly in the downwardly swung position of the platform to render the provision of the said arm objectionable. In the structure hereinbefore described and illustrated the spring .9 holds the arm out of the'way in the said position of the platform.

What I claim is 1. In a sewing-machine table or cabinet,

the combination with the table-top having an opening extending vertically therethrough, the platform pivotally supported from the table-top and arranged to swing in a vertical plane and instrumental in closing the said opening in its upwardly swung position, and a leaf adapted to cover the said opening and hinged to the table-top, of a bracket arran ed at the under side of and rigid with the p atform; an arm pivotally attached to the said bracket and arranged with its axis parallel with the axis of the platform, said arm projecting downwardly when the platform is in its opening-closing position a guide-sheave supported from the bracket a spring acting to retain the said arm in position alongside of the bracket; means for limiting the swinging of the arm out of the said position, and an operative connection between the arm and the cover-forming leaf, said connection coinf prising a strap extending in under and engaging the aforesaid sheave in the depending position of the platform.

2. In a sewing-machine table or cabinet, the combination, with the table-top having an opening therethrou h, a latform pivotally supported from t e ta le-top and ar ranged t0 swin in a vertical plane and instrumental in c osing the said opening in its upwardly swung position, and a hinged leaf adapted to cover the said opening, of an arm arranged at the under side and transversely of and pivot-ally supported from the platform, said arm being arranged to project downwardly from the platform when the platform is in its opening-closing position; a guidesheave arranged at the under side of and supported from the platform, with its axis coincident with the axis of the arm; means acting to retain the arm swung toward the platform; means for limiting the swinging of the arm away from the platform, and an opera tive connection between the arm and the cover-forming leaf, said connection comprising a strap leading in under and engaging the aforesaid sheave in the depending posi tion of the platform.

3. In a sewing-machine table or cabinet, the combination, with the table-top having an opening extending vertically therethrough, the platform pivotally supported from the table-top and arranged to swing in a vertical plane and instrumental in closing the said opening in its upwardly swung posi tion, and a leaf adapted to cover the said opening and hinged to the table-top, of an arm arranged at the under side of and pivotally supported from the platform, with the axis of the arm parallelwith the axis of the platform, said armbeing arranged to project downwardly from the platform when the platform is in its opening-closing 'positiong a guide-sheave arranged at the under side of and supported from the platform; a spring the combination, with, the table-top having an opening therethrou h; a latform pivotally supported from the ta le-top and arranged to swing in a vertical plane and in strumental in closing the said opening in its upwardly swung position, and a hinged leaf adapted to cover the said opening, of an arm arranged at the under side and transversely of and pivotally supported from the platform, said arm being arrangedto project down wardly from the platform when the platform is in its opening-closing position; a spring acting to retain the arm swung toward the platform; means for limitin the swinging of the arm away from the p atform, and an operative connection between the arm and the cover forming leaf, said connection com prising a suitably guided strap.
