Specification 'of Letters Patent.
iatented April 2, 1907.
Application filed September 11, 1905. Serial No. 277,893.
To all whom it may concern/i Be'it known that I, FRED W. TOBEY, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Type- Writer Cabinets and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de' scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in type-writer cabinets, and more particularly to such cabinets having an inner chamber in which is a movable platform to support the type-writer, and above which chamber is a movable cover connected to the platform,
whereby when as the cover is opened and closed the platform is raised and lowered; and 1 its object is to )rovide the device with improved means or connectlng the latform and cover, to provide means for 100 mg the cover and platform in open position, and to provide the device with various new and useful features hereinafter morefully described, and particularly pointed. out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a-vertical section of a device embodying my invention, showing the same in closed position Fig. 2, a perspective view I of the same; and Fig. 3, a vertical section of the same, showing the device in open position in solid lines and in partially-opened position in broken lines.
Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures. l The case is in the usual form ofa desk or table, as may be preferred, and having a chamber in its interior to contain the typewriter and its supporting-table. This chamber is closed at the sides bythe usual chests of drawers or other receptacles, and the bottom of the chamber is provided with a closure 7, preferably an open frame, and a concave front 6, which bottom and front are spaced apart from the sides of the. chamber and supported at the front by a metal bracket 16 and at the rear by the back of the case to permit the passage through said space of the various connecting-rods and levers to support and operate the platform for the type-wrlter.
In the preferred form shown the movable part of the top consists of two separate sections'-a front sect-ion 1, hinged at the rear to the intermediate section, as at 3, to which is attached a downwardly-extended apron 5, forming a art of the front of the case when closed, an an intermediate section 2, hinged to the stationary part of the top at its rear, as at 4. I v
8 is a movable platform on which the typewriter is supported. This platform is carried upon four- parallel arms 9 and 10, pivoted at one end to the platform near its respective corners and at the other end to the sides of the chamber of the case and extending through the s ace between the bottom 7. and concave 6 an said sides of the chamber and adapted tojturn to a vertical position when the device isopen for use and to turn rearward and downward to ether with the platform when the device is c losed.
Q To operate and adjust the arms and plat form, leversll are pivoted at one end to the side walls of the case and connected at the other end by rods 12 to the arms 10, and from the levers 1 1 other connecting-rods 13 extend upward and are connected to short arms 14,
rigidly attached to the section 2 of the top.
'Near the rear of the platform}; is an upwardly-projecting stop 15, adapted to engage the lower edge of the apron 5 when the device is open, and thus lock the device in open position until .the front edge of the section 1 is lifted to release the same.
The hinge 3 being on the under side of the parts 1 and 2 forms' a rule-joint between these parts, ,Whereby when the front edge of the section 1 is lifted to open the device the sections 1 and2 form a lever turning on the pivot formed by the hinges 4, the arms 14 thus forming the other member of a bell crank lever, whereby through the rods 13, levers 11 and rods 12 the arms 9 and 10 are turned from the rear wardly-inclined position to vertical position, and thus carry the platform Sin a horizontal position upward and forward to position for using the type-writer, as shown in Fig. 3. When the device is nearly open, the front part 1 can be turned downward and forward and the opening process completed by pushing theupper part of the section 2 backward to open position, as indicated in Fig. 3. When the front of the part 1 is lowered to place and. the apron 5 en aged by the stop 15, the device not only is 100 red in open position,
but the entire section 1 is in horizontal and proper positionto be used as an elevated ta ble at the rear of the type-writer, and the apron 5 closes the space between the section sure'of the chamber below and preventing anything from falling into the same.
planes with the middle part inverted, and an apron on the front of the cover adapted to engage the stop to lock the device with the platform elevated and the cover open.
2. In a type-writer cabinet, a case having an inner chamber, a platform movable in the chamber, means for movably supporting the platform, a stop on the platform, a cover to the chamber and having a hinged rear portion'adaptedto turn to reversed horizontal positions, and a front portion hinged thereto to move rearward Without reversing, an apron on the cover to engage the stop, and means for connecting the rear portion of the cover and said platform-supp orting means to simultaneously adjust the cover and platform.
3. In a type-writer cabinet, a case having p Witnesses:
an inner chamber, a platform movable in the chamber, means for supporting and moving the platform, a cover for the chamber divided into front, middle, and rear parts, said parts bei hinged to each other, the rear part bemg turn to reversed horizontal positions, the front part being moved rearward thereby without reversal, a bottom in the chamber having an upwardly-extended front portion, and an apron on the front portion of the ed, the middle part being adapted to cover adapted to engage the front of the bottom when the device is closed, and to engage the rear of the platform when the device is open.
4. tion of a case having an inner chamber, a platform movable in the chamber, parallel arms pivoted to the platform atone end and In a type-writer cabinet, the combingto the sidesof the chamber at the other end, a
cover havin a hinged portion adapted to turn to reversed orizontal positions, a rigid arm on said portion, a toggle-joint lever pivoted at its respective ends tov one of the parallel arms and to the case, and a rod connecting,
the said lever and the arm on the cover. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
