Speciceton of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18, 1908.
Application ned April 8.1907. serial n5361005.
To all 'whom it 'ma-f confer/L.' A I it lmown that l', HENRY R. ToWNn, of i New York, in the county of New York and i of .New York, have invented certain I new und useful Improvements in Lock-l Ceses; and l do hereby declsre the following to be n fuli, cle-er, exact description of the invention, such es will enable othersl skilled. in the art to which it epperteins to l inelie and use the seme. l n l My ii ention relu s 'to on in lool; ce es end the method et attaching e l farce plete or cover to ther-.ese end it consists (l improvement broadly in providing the cese carrying the parts of the lock, with en opening through which the operetire parte may be inserted, the seid opening boing surrounded by en undercut or grooved shoulder adapted to receive the edge of e concave-convex fece. `plete or cover, and then spreading or liettening the fece pleteor cover so es to cause the outer edges of seine to enter the under he shoulder end thus perfece plete or cover to the msnently loch the loc-lt casing.
in the accompanying drswing, Figure lis e. vier. in elevation-of the loch. Fig. 2 is a view in elevstion with one fece plete reiner Fig. 3 is s view in section through the l and Fig. it is s view of one of the fece plates.
le l have for ther pur ose of conveno'wn, and will describe my improve,- :ent' iA connection with pcdlocks, l would it understood that it is adapted to any l type of loch the cese of which hes en l ening for the insertion of the assembled ve ports of 'the lock, and s cover or fece plete for closing seid opening.
l represents the loch cese which in the it instance, is circular in form and is `ed on its periphery with two openings fom Ae passage of the shrinks or ends of the elif... ond rotating shackle. Une member of tins shackle olthis particular lock, is adopted to cuter vone fnoeninor and when locked, rests with its iree end t erein, while i the other member is engaged by the locking mechanism and is released and retracted orf locked thereby. The locking mechanism is carried by s. freine 3 inserted within the cavity in the end the letter is provided with e. seat and undercut shoulder 5 extending around all sides of the opening in the face of the casing. In thepresent instance the cavity in the loclr case and the sent 4 and shoulder 5 are circular inform but l would have it understood that they may be oval, angular or any other shape desired.
The face plete or cover 6 is mede slightly dish shaped and is of e size to snugly ht on the sent- 4 with its beveled edge 7 resting under the undercut shoulder 5, and it may if desired be rib'ied or corrugated for strengthen- ,65 ing seme` After the operating parts of the lock have been properly located and secured within the cese, .the face plete or cover which is made of sheet motel, is placed in position on the seat 4 with its convex fece out, and pressure is applied to the latter preferably at the center, whichcauses the'face plete to spread or Hatten out and thus become iirmly and permanently locked to the case.
In the present instencel have shown the lock with its two feces closed by such plates, but it is evident thatone face may be enst or otherwise formed integral with the case, thus leaving oneisce only to be closed by my improved fece plate.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent, is
l. A lock comprising a casing having an opening in one face thereof, lend en undercut shoulder surrounding said opening, and a fece plete having its outer edge forced under said shoulder, whereby the plate becomes permanently fastened to the casing.
2. A loc comprising a casing, having a. seat and undercut shoulder, and en expandedl face plete resting on the seat with its outer edge under said undercut shoulder.
A lock comprising a. easing having a circuler opening in one face, end a. continuons seat and shoulder around said opening, and en expanded plate conforming in shape to the shape of said opening, the said plete resting on the seat with its edge under said undercut shoulder.
In testimony whereof, 1 have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribe HENRY R. TOWNE. l/Vitnesses:
ing Witnesses.
