Be it known that I, CovnLLE S..MoELRoY, a citiz-in of the United States, residing at Steppville, in the county of Cherokee and Stateof Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Screen-Doors, of which the following is a specification.

T his invention relates to screen doors that are used for excluding flies and other insects; and it has for its object to provide a screen d0O..' attachment, which when the door is opened to permit of the passage of persons will constitute a guard to prevent flies and other insects from entering the room over t] a top of the door.

Further oojects of the invention are to simplify and improve the construction and operation of this class of devices.

ith these and other ends in View which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists essentially in a foldable guard adapted to be applied to the top of the door and to the lintel of the door frame in such a manner that when the door swings open the guard will be unfolded; said guard being composed of a plurality of ribs, means for movably sustaining said ribs in position, and a flexible member, preferably of textile material, connected with and supported by the ribs.

The invention further consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

ing the improved attachment. The latter comprises a rod or arm 3, one end of which is bent to form an eye 4 and a segmental bracket 5, which latter is concentric with the eye 4. The armor rod 3 is'secured in the recess 2 of the lintel, adjacent to the hinged edge of the door 6 by means of'a pivotal member such as a p n 7 extending through the eye 4. The rod or,,arm 3 is connected with the door, adjacent to the upper edge of the latter, by means of a sleeve 01. keeper 8 in which said rod or arms has a lin'ited sliding movement when the ClTO is swung 'open or shut.

Loosely connected with the concentric bracket 5 are a plurality of radial ribs 9; said ribs being provided with loops or eyes 10 em gaging said bracket. These ribs are sustained in an approximately horizontal posi- "ion in a plane adjacent to the up n edge of the door by means of a curved supporting bracket 11 which is suitably secured upon the lintel within the recess 2 of the latter; said supporting bracket being extended beyond the lintel a sufficient distance to afford a frame support for the ribs 9. The upper edge of the door has a cut away portion or recess 12 adjacent to the hinged edge for the purpose of accommodating the bracket 11 when the door is closed.

Suitably connected with the ribs 9 is a foldable guard member 13 which may be made of any suitable light textile material; one edge of said guardmember is connected with the rod or arm 3, and the other edge is secured upon the lintel, within the recess of the latter by fastening means such as tacks 14.

The operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. When the door, to which the invention has been applied, is swung open, the rod or arm 3 will be swun outward from the lintel with the door, and. t e foldable guard will thus be extended,

prevent flies and other insects from entering over the upper edge of the door; the ribs of the guard being sustained in approximately horizontal position upon the guard bracket 11, and the said ribs being loosely connected with the curved supporting bracket 5, so that 1e guard may be freely extended; when the door is shut, the guard will be collapsed, and the ribs will be supported within the recess 2 of the lintel, from which the folds of the flexible guard member l gwfiidepend, aswill be readilyimderstood.

w This improved guard appliance may be manufactured at a very moderate expense, and when applied to screen doors it will obviate the serious difficulty heretofore experienced of insects passing into the room over the upper edge of the door.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. In a device of the class described, a pivotally supported rod or arm having a supporting bracket concentric with the pivot, a plurality of ribs pivoted upon said bracket, a

4. A door lintel having a recess in its underside, a rod or arm pivoted in said recess and having a bracket concentric with the pivot, a plurality of ribs loosely mounted upon said bracket, a supporting member secured upon the lintel and engaging the ribs to support the latter in approximately horizontal position, a door having a recess at its upper edge to accommodate the supporting member, means for connecting the pivoted rod or arm slidably with the door, and the flexible guard member carried by the ribsand having one edge connected with the pivoted rod or arm and the other edge secured in the recess of the lintel.
