JOHN WESLEY MCGOWAN, OF CINCINNATI, OI-IIO.
UMBRELLA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 14,1916.
Application filed May 4, 1914. Serial No. 836,253.
To all whomz't mag concern Be it lmown that I, JOHN W. MCGOWAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in umbrellas and has for its object to provide an umbrella having an extensible 'section.
Another object of the invention is to provide an umbrella having a slidable extension connected thereto.
Still another object of my invention is to provide an umbrella having a portion adapted to extend below the edge thereof.
With the above and other objects in view I have invented the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1, is a perspectiveview of my improved umbrella. Fig. 2, is a fragmental, sectional view thereof. Fig. 3, is a sectional elevational view of the device showing the extensible member in raised position. Fig. 4, is a detail elevational view of a frame for the extensible member, shown extended. Fig. 5, is a view similar to Fig. 4, the device being shown collapsed. Fig. 6, is a sectional elevational view of an umbrella showing a modification of my invention. Fig. 7, is a vertical sectional view of an extension member.
Like characters of reference designate like or corresponding parts throughout the different views, in which 1, indicates an umbrella having ribs 4 and 5, upon which a collapsible frame 6, is slidable by means of eyes 7 and 8, 9 and 10, on the arms 11 and 12, thereof. The arms 11 and 12, are connected by means of a transverse member 13, said member consisting of a pair of arms 14 and 15, hingedly connected at 16, whereby the frame 6, may be folded as indicated in Fig. 5. Mounted on the frame 6 is a cover 17, made ofthe same material as the cover 18 of the umbrella 1. A preferably elastic band-19 connects the upper ends 20 and 21 of the arms 11 and 12. The two separated eyes 7 and 8, on the arm 11, and 9 and 10, on the arm 12, hold said arms normally rigidly connected with the ribs 4 and 5, however, permitting said arms 11 and 12, to be slidable on said ribs 4 and 5, whereby the shield 22, may be drawn down to extend below the edge 23 of the umbrella cover, in order to more fully shield a person from the rain,'which may be falling at an angle rather than vertically, or to shield said person from the angularly projecting rays of the sun. On raising the shield to its uppermost position within the umbrella as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the elastic band 19, will crimp the upper edge 24 of said shield and prevent it from bagging.
In order to fold the device when the umbrella is folded all that is necessary to do is to force the central or hinged portion 16 of the arms 14 and 15, upwardly against the tension of the cloth 17 which connects the arms 11 and 12.
In Figs. 6 and 7, I show a modification of my invention in which the shield 26 is stretched between the sliding ribs 26 and 27, which are slidably held to the ribs 28 and 29, of the umbrella 30, by means of the eyes 31, 32, and 33, the eyes 31 and 32, being below the joints 34 and the eye 33 above said joint. The upper edge of the shield 25 is mounted upon an elastic band 35, for the purpose previously explained in connection with the device shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim as new and secure by Letters Patent is 1. An umbrella having ribs and a shield slidably mounted upon said ribs, said shield being adapted to extend below the edge of said umbrella, said shield being flexible, means wherebysaid shield may be held taut, and means whereby said upper edge of said shield may be gathered when in a raised position, said first means consisting of a frame, said frame being foldable, said second means consisting of an elastic support for the upper edge of said shield.
2. In combination with an umbrella having ribs, a shield slidably mounted upon said ribs, means for gathering the upper edge of said shield as it is raised within said umbrella, means whereby said shield is rigidly supported upon said ribs, and said means consisting of rods upon which said shield is mounted.
3. In combination with an umbrella having ribs, a shield slidably mounted upon said ribs, means for gathering the upper edge of said shield as it is raised Within said In testimony whereof I affix my signature umbrella, means whereby said shield is rigin presence of two witnesses.
idly supported upon said ribs, said means JOHN WESLEY MGGOVVAN. 7 consisting of rods upon Which said shield is Witnesses: i 5 mounted, and each of said rods having two HENRY VOLF,
spaced apart eyes engaging said ribs. ALEX. J. \VEDDERBURN, Jr.
