FOOT REST. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 30. I906.
CBEarZej CHRISTIE P. EARLEY, OF AUBURN, MASSACHUSETTS.
FOOT-REST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 10, 1907.
Application filed June 30. 1906- Serial No. 324-255.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIE P. EARLEY, citizen of the United States, residing at Auburn, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Foot-Rests, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to foot rest attachments for chairs designed especially for affording a support for the feet of children or other persons of short stature when seated and has for its objects to produce a simple inexpensive device of this character which may be readily installed for use and one which in practice may be conveniently adjusted as circumstances require.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a rest embodying the invention and showing the same applied for use. Fig. 2 is afront elevation of the rest showing the same on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view, partly in section, the section being taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a chair of the usual or any preferred construction and material having legs 2 to which are applied a foot rest 3 constituting the subject matter of the invention.
The rest 3 which is of L-shape in cross section includes in its organization a cross piece or strip 4 arranged at right angles to the rest proper and having longitudinal guide openings or slots 5 adapted to receive clamping members or bolts 6 arranged in corresponding openings or slots 7 provided in a clamping member or bar 8 arranged at the normally inner face of the cross piece 4 and disposed in parallel relation to the latter, there being tapped onto the inner ends of the bolts 6 clamping nuts 9.
In practice the legs 2 of the chair are entered between the cross piece 4 and clamping bar 8 and after the foot rest has been properly adjusted, it is fixed against movement on the legs by tightening the clamping nuts 9,
it being apparent that when circumstances require the nuts maybe loosened and the rest moved upward or downward upon the legs 2 to proper position for supporting the feet of the occupant of the chair. Owing to the presence of the longitudinal slots 5 and 7 the rest may be conveniently and securely adjusted upon chairs of varying widths, or the legs of which are spaced different distances apart, it being possible in any caseto adjust the bolts in close proximity to the legs of the chair where they will obviously exercise a firmer grip and holding action than if placed or'located at a distance from the legs.
The strips or members 3 and 4 constituting the rest proper are reinforced by means of suitable blocks or brackets 10 disposed in the angle between said strips or members.
From the foregoing it is apparent that I produce a simple device admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view, it being understood that minor changes in the details herein set forth maybe resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. A foot rest including an angular or L- shaped member including two strips secured together at right an les, one of said strips being provided with ongitudinal slots at the ends thereof and a clamping bar likewise having longitudinal slots at the ends thereof in combination with connecting bolts adjustable in the longitudinal slots of the L- shaped member and the clamping bar, and a support upon which the foot rest is clamped.
2. A foot rest comprising an angular or L-shaped member having reinforcing blocks disposed in the angle thereof and longitudinal slotsat the ends thereof in combination with a clamping bar having longitudinal slots at the ends thereof, connecting bolts adjustable in the longitudinal slots of the L-shaped member and the clamping bar, and a supporting member upon which the foot rest is clamped.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHRISTIE P. EARLEY.
Witnesses:
