WILLIAM H. DUSENBURY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DOG-MUZZLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 190 '7.
Application filed July 9-1907- Serial No- 382,842.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. DUsEN- BURY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dog-Muzzles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a very simple, durable, and economic form of muzzle, and to so construct the same that it will not chafe the nose at any point, and which will also effectively prevent the nose of the animal protruding through the front of the muzzle.
It is also a purpose of the invention to provide a muzzle of the character described that will be constructed almost entirely of wire, and one that can be worn with comparative comfort.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts as will be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures. 1
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved muzzle; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal, vertical section taken about centrally through the muzzle.
The body of the muzzle is constructed from a single piece of wire of suitable gage bent upon itself to form two side members A and A that diverge at their rear ends, and an upwardly and forwardly inclined arched head bar member B that rises from the rear portions of the side bar members, and a front crossed guard section C that extends upward with aslight forward inclination from the forward end portions of the side bar members A and A, and a throat member D in the form of a bar that connects the side bar members A and A where the arched head member B is joined to them. The aforesaid single wire is formed into loops 10 at the rear ends of the side bar members A and A, which loops receive links 11 adapted to carry the neck strap 12. Where the side bar members A and A connect with the front crossed guard section C, said wire is bent upon itself to form eyes 13 to which the ends of a chin bar 14 are secured, and said chin bar at its center isconnected with the throat bar D by means of a brace bar 15.
In forming the front crossed bar section C, the wire is bent to provide two crossed members 16 and 17, formed with coils at their upper portion, said coils being designated as 16 and 17 and the front is straight, crossing from coil to coil to provide a connecting or bridging member 18. This guard section C constitutes one of the features of the invention and serves to prevent the animal from thrusting its nose through the front end of the muzzle, and yet is comfortable, affording ample room and ventilation, while the coils 16 and 17' render the muzzle very strong yet elastic at its forward end where the greatest strength is needed.
Another feature of the invention is what I term a connecting nose strap E; this strap is made from plate metal of light weight, and
is provided with a loop 19 at its outer or forward end and a larger loop 20 at its inner. or rear end. The loop 19 is made to grip the bridging member 18 of the crossed guard section 0, while the loop 20 receives the bow section of the arched head member 13, and also the bowed arched member B, that extend down and are secured respectively to the rear and forward end portions of the side bar members A and A, and the said 100 20 further receives a link 21 connected wit a head strap 22, which in its turn has sliding connection with the neck strap 12.
A muzzle constructed in the manner above described is of very simple form and is likewise very effective. The parts are but few in number, yet they are thoroughly braced and occupy such position as to' render the muzzle highly protective yet prevent undue chafing of the parts inclosed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
In a dog muzzle, a body portion comprising side bar members, a connecting throat member, an upwardly and forwardly extending guard section comprising two centrally crossed members, each terminating in a coil at its upper end, a member connecting the coils, an arched head member that extends upwardly and forwardly from the rear portion of the side bar members, a
flat metal strap secured at its forward end name to this specification in the presence of to the guard section between the coils theretwo subscribing witnesses.
of, being attached at-its rear end to the WILLIQM H DUSENBURY upper central portion of said head member, 4
5 and a link earned by the rear end portion of Witnesses:
said strap. 'J. FRED. AOKER,
In testimony whereof I have signed my JOHN P. DAVIS.
