To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE B. CRIsPIN and ROLA F. WRIGHT, citizens of the United States, residing at Charleston, in the county of Coles, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and We do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to that class of wrenches that are provided with dual fixed and adjustable jaws,
the adjustable jaw being made a part of a slide that is moved on the screw-threaded shank of the fixed jaw by the rotation of a hollow interiorly screw-threaded handle into which the shank of the fixed jaw extends, the rotary handle being engaged with the slide to move it as the handle is turned.
It is the object of the invention to provide improved means for setting the jaws with the greatest degree of firmness upon objects between them, and to release the said objects without turning the same back with the wrenchin other words, to cause the jaws to let go in whatsoever position they may be when operated to turn up a tap, bolt, pipe or the like.
The nature of this invention may be fully and clearly ascertained from the device portrayed in the annexed drawing, forming a part of this specification, in view of which it will be described in detail with respect to its construction and mode of operation and then be pointed out in the subjoined claims.
Of the said drawings-Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section view thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the bandle showing the polygonally-faced enlargement thereon.
Similar numerals of reference designate similar parts or features, as the case may be, wherever they occur.
In the drawings 5 designates what I term a dual fixed jaw having a long screw-threaded shank 6.
7 designates a slide provided at its forward end with a dual jaw 8 and having an opening through its longitudinal center, through which the shank 6 is extended.
9 designates a hollow handle interiorly screw-threaded to receive the screw-threaded shank G. The slide 7 is provided on its inner end with an enlargement 10 through'which an opening 11 is formed from side to side, the interior walls of which opening are provided with two spaced ribs 12. The forward or inner end of the handle 9 is enlarged and provided with two spaced annular collars 14. The construction and arrangement of the parts is such that the enlarged end of the handle may be placed laterally in the opening 11 in the slide with the ribs 12 entering the interspaces or grooves 15 between the annular collars 14 of the handle, while the said collars will fit loosely in the grooves or interspaces 16, between the ribs of the slide. By this means the shank of the fixed jaw may become engaged by the hollow handle in such a way that by the turning of the handle the slide may be moved thereon to adjust the movable jaw of the slide with respect to the fixed jaw. Two collars and ribs are employed instead of one because of less liability of the ribs and collars becoming bound in setting the jaws upon an object to be operated upon so that all the energy exerted upon the handle will be effective in tightening or loosening the jaws. Furthermore, and what is even more important, is that the wrench is adapted to be employed as a pipe wrench the leverage exerted on the handle is often very great, the length of the connection between the handle and slide 7 limits the strain put upon the screw-threaded shank 6, so as to minimize the liability of bending said shank to any degree, which happening would greatly impair its usefulness.
' It frequently happens that the jaws cannot be set by hand with sullieient firmness on an object to effect the turning or otherwise operating it, or if firmly set that the jaws cannot be moved to let go without turning said object back to a greater or less degree. I have therefore provided the handle with a polygonally laced enlargement 17 at the inner end of the handle proper and made integral or compounded therewith, that may be engaged by a separate wrench to turn it to loosen the jaws to cause them to let go without turning the handle back to any extent. The said enlargement affords, inter alia, a means which may be grasped by the thumb and fore-finger while the handle is held by the hand, to keep the jaws from turning or to turn the same somewhat for the purpose of adjustment. One of the dual jaws is adapted to act as a pipe or round-rod wrench and the other to act upon nuts or taps or heads of bolts.
The construction and arrangement for making the jaws take a firm grip upon an object is thoroughly ellicient, there being no undue friction or binding effect between the parts, and the loosening of jaws is readily effected no matter what the position of the handle may be when operating upon an object.
What is claimed is- 1. i-\ wrench comprising a jaw having a scrmwtlircaded shank, a slide provided with a jaw, and having a longitudinal opening through which the shank is adapted to ex- Lond, and having an enlarged inner end 10 with an opening therethrough from side to side, with two ribs and grooves at the sides of said opening and an interior-1y threaded hollow handle to receive said shank, the forward end of the handle being provided with annular grooves and ribs to cooperate with the like specified features on the inner end of the slide, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A wrench comprising a jaw having a screw-threaded shank, a slide provided with a jaw, and having a longitudinal ppening through which the shank is adapted to exend of the handle being provided with annular grooves andribs to coiiperate with the like specified features on the 10 inner end of the slide, the inner portion of the handle heing also provided with an integral pol ygonally faced enlargernent, as and for the purpose set forth.
