To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, BYRON E.- MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Slater, in the county of Saline and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inVVrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates an improved wrench somewhat similar in form to the well known type of monkey wrench and has as itsprimary object to provide a device of this character wherein leverage exerted upon the handle of the wrench in turning anut in the practical use of the device, will tend to shift the movable jaw toward the fixed jaw into binding engagement with the nut.
The invention has as a further object to provide a wrench wherein the handle thereof will be pivotally mounted upon the shank of the wrench and pivotallyconnected to the movable jaw so that shifting of the handle upon its pivot will correspondingly actuate-the movable jaw either toward or] away from the fixed jaw. And the inven= tion has as a still further object to provide an adjustable connection between the movable jaw and the handle so that the field of use of the wrench will be correspondingly enlarged.
Other and incidental objects will appear as the description proceeds and in the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention and wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved wrench, Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view more particularly showing the mounting of the coacting parts of the wrench, and Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2..
In the preferred embodiment of the invention as illustrated in the drawings, my improved wrench includes a shank 10 upon one extremity of which. is formed a fixed jaw 11, while the opposite extremity of Said shank is curved or cut away as shown at 12.
Slidably mounted upon the shank 10 is a movable jaw 13 adapted to coact with the fixed jaw. Upon its forward edge, the jaw 13 is cut away to provide a longitudinally extending socket 14 which opens. through the lower face of the jaw and the side walls of which provide spaced parallel flanges 15.

nal. of the shank 10 is a handle 16. The handle 16, at oneextremity is formed with a laterally extending head 17, which includes spaced parallel flanges 18. It will be observed that the curved end of'the shank 10 1S freely received between the flanges 18 adjacent one extremity of the head and is swingingly connected with the said flanges by a suitable pivot pin 19. Preferably, the pivot pin 19 is removable, having screw threaded engagement with one of the flanges, so that if-desired, the handle may be de tached from the shank.
Connecting the head 17 adjacent its outer extremity, with the movableaw 13, is a link 20. One extremity of said link is freely received between the flanges 18 of the head and isdetachably connected with the head by a suitable pivot pin 21, which extends through suitable alined openings formed in the said flanges and the link and is screw threaded into one of the openings of the flanges;
"The opposite inner terminal of the link 20 is freely received within the socket 14 and formed in the said link at the adjacent extremity thereof, is a series of longitudinally spaced openings 22. The flanges 15 providing the side walls of the socket, are formed with suitable alined openings adapted to removably receive a pivot pin 23, which swingingly connects the link with the movable jaw 13. As best shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings, the pin 23 is screw threaded into one of said flanges and is preferably provided with. a milled head so that it may be readily removed. As will be readily under stood, the pivot pin 23 is adapted to be engaged in any one of the series of openings 22 and in this way, the movable jaw is adjustably connected with the handle 16.
The purpose and advantage of thus adjustably connecting the movable jaw with the handle of the wrench will at once be clear, since by such arrangement, the field of use of the device is greatly enlarged, the wrench being thus adapted to engage nuts of various sizes. In this connection, it may be observed that the range of adjustment between the movable jaw and the handle is defined by the length of the socket 1 1, the opening of the series of openings 22 arranged most nearly adjacent the pivot pin 21, being so disposed relative to the opposite terminal of the link 20, that when the 1 set screw or pivot 23 is disposed in said opening, the inner terminal of the link 20 will closely approach the adjacent end wall of the socket. It will be noted that the adjacent inner end of the link 20 is cut away or curved so as to permit of the free pivotal movement of the link when so adjusted but when so adjusted and stress is applied to the handle 16 to turn a nut, the adjacent inner end of the link will abut the contiguous end wall of the socket and thus coact with the pivot pin 23' in supporting a load.
From the preceding description, it is thought that the operation of my improved wrench will be entirely clear. It will be noted that as the handle 16 is swung upon its pivot 19, the movable aw 13 will be correspondingly moved either toward or away from the fixed jaw 11. The wrench may thus be readily connected with the work when subsequent stress upon the handle 16 tending to turn the work will, through the -medium of the laterally extending head 18 and the link 20, tend to shift the movable jaw into binding engagement with the Work in a manner which will be readily understood.
It will thus be seen that I provide a very simple and efficient construction for the purpose set forth employing but few parts and wherein the Wrench may be readily manipulated to adapt the coacting jaws to various sizes of work.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A device of the character described including a shank provided with a fixed jaw,
a movable jaw shiftable upon the shank and adapted to coact with thefixed jaw, the movable jaw being formed with a socket, a handle provided with a laterally extending head recessed to provide upstanding flanges, the inner extremity of the shank beingpivotally connected to said flanges at one extremity of the head, a link pivotally connected to the BYRON E. MOORE.
