Description

ft genital CHARLES A. SLACK, OF FRENCHTOWN, NEW JERSEY.
Lette/rs Patent No. 86,877, dated Febfrua/ry 9, 1869.
IMPROVED THILL-COU'PLING.
The schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the Same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES A. SLAoK, of Frenchtown, in the county of Hunterdon, and in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaft-Coupling; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention' consists in the construction and general arrangement of a shaft-coupling, by which an instantaneous coupling is effected, and all rattling prevented.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the saine, I
will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section, and
Figure 2, a perspective of a slotted plate used in the coupling.
A represents the axle, around which is placed the clip B.
The clip B is, on the front side, provided with ears C C, through which a bolt, D, passes.
E is the shaft-iron, secured to the shaft F.
The outer end of the shaft-iron E is provided with a head, lr, which is round on its upper and 'rear side, and on the under side, provided with a slot, so thatl `when the head is inserted between the ears() C, the
bolt D may pass into said slot, and the head rest on the bolt. Another bolt, I, is 'secured to the under side of the shaft-iron, a suitable distance in front ofthe slot mentioned.
This bolt is passed through an elongated slot in a plate, H, and a nut, J tightly secures said plate.
This plate is of the saine width as the shaft-iron,
: and has on'its upper side, at the rear end, a flange, a, which passes up in the slot in the head G, under the bolt D, and when now the nut J is tightened, the coupling is complete.
Tovtalre off the shaft, it is only necessary .to loosen the nut J sutioieutly to allow the plate H to slide forward, when the shaft-iron can at once be released from the bolt.
Having thus fully described -iuy invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
, The combination of the slotted plate H, having ilange a, with the head G, bolt I, and nut J, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for tlie purposes herein set forth. Y
ln testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 13th day of January, 1869.
CHARLES A. SLAGK.
