Description

' n'rniv'r COLEMAN BRIDGMAN, OF ST. CLOUD, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN THlLL-COUPLINGS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, COLEMAN BRIDGMAN, of St. Cloud, in the county of Stearns and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Thill-Goupling; and I do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exact description' thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to furnish a simple, convenient, and safe coupling for thills of buggies, wagons, Suc.; and it consists-in a jointed coupling-pin and slotted ear, and also in a slotted washer, arranged to operate as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a 'top view, showing the coupling-pin secured as when in use. Fig. 2 represents it as ready to be removed. Fig. 3 is aside view of the couplmgiron, showing the slot .in the ear. Fig. 4 is a view of the slotted washer.
Similar letters ofreference indicate corresponding parts. p
A is the coupling-iron, which is provided with ears, B C, through which the coupling-pin D passes. One of the ears is slotted, as shown in Fig. 3, to allow the jointed end of the pin to Work back and forth. E is the jointed end of the coupling-pin or key. This piece E turns on a pivotpin, as seen in Fig. l. This end piece is fitted to stand parallel with the rest of the pin, and corresponds in size therewith, as seen'in Fig. 2. F is the slot. When the pin is turned so that the end G of the piece corresponds in position l with the slot, the end may, after the pin is inlserted, be turned either to or from a right angle, when the end Gpwill project .and form a perfect stop. In practice the heavy end of the piece E will drop down and carry the end G from the slot F, so that it effectually locks the pin. H is a washer, made of any suitable material, slotted, as seen in Fig. 4, and used between the jointed end E and the ear, as seen in Fig. 1. When the washer is used it may be turned on the pin away from the slot in the ear, so as to be an additional security. The coupling-iron A is attached to the axle ofthe buggy or wagon by means of bolts or by a clip over the axles.
This is a simple, durable, and perfectly safe coupling, without screws or spring, and is adjusted without hammer, wrench, or other tool, without trouble, and in the most expeditious and easy manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The jointed pin or key D, in combination with .the coupling A, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The slot F, in thc ear C of the coupling A, in combination with the pin D, as shown and described.
3. The slotted washer H, in combination with the jointed pin D and slotted ear C, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
COLEMAN BRIDGMAN.
