To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, HERMAN L. WAGNER, a citizen of the Unitcd States, residing in Mount Vernon, in the county of Westchester and State of New York; have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type- Writing Machines, .of which the following is a specifica tioni l 1 4 This invention relates to the paper-guiding or feeding devices of typewritingmachines, and particularlyfto paper-pressing rolls, and means for'releasing the same.- The object of the invention is to provide simple and inexpensive means which "can readily be appliedto'ex ist-ing machines for releasing the pressure rolls.

' In the'accompanying drawings, Figural is a front l elevation of the carriage of an Underwood typewriting machine, showing my improvements appliedthereto. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan'showing diagrammatically the system of pressure rolls which run upon the platen. Fig. 3 is a sectional end elevation, showing the parts in 20 working positions: Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but showing thepressure rolls releasedfrom the platen. Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing a portion of the pressure roll system.

Types 1 strike against the front side of a platen 2, which is mounted by means ofan axle 3/in the ends 4 of a platen frame, said ends being connected by a paper shelf 5. A setv of rear pressure rolls 6 is journaled upon a shaft 7, the rolls being separated by sleeves or spacers 8 fitting loosely upon the shaft. A set of front pressure rolls 9 is mounted upon a shaft 10, both shafts extending parallel with the platen axle A parallel rod 11 extends-harm one platen frame end 4 to the other hetween the shafts 7, 10, and is usually fixed to said ends and forms a tie-rod for the platen frame, andusually carries a wheel 12 upon which the platen frame runs. Arms 13, 14 extend rearwardly and forwardly from said rod 11 to engage and support the roll shafts 7, 10, said arms having open ends or bearings 15 to permit ready detachment of the roll shafts and rolls bodily from the machine. Springs 16 are fixed upon the main rod 11 and press said arms, shafts and rolls toward the platen. Pendent from the main rod 11. are brackets 17 in which is journaled a rock shaft 18 having diametrical flats or cam surfaces 19, which are formed by cutting recesses at intervals in the rock shaft. Yokes, straps or stirrups 20 have open vertical slots 21 which it loosely upon both said rock shaft and saidrod l1. 4 Fingers 22, 23 extend oppositely from the body of each of said yokes, and are inserted between the roll shafts and the platen. The rock shaft 18 preferably turns enough '.The fingers 22 may press either directly upon the spacing sleeves 8, or directly against the shaft 7, the latter donstruction being illustrated in the drawings, slots being cut in the sleeves at 27 for this purpose.

When it is desired to detach either roll shaft together with its rolls, it is only necessary to pull down the pressure arms 13 orl, asthe case may be, and lift the shaft out of the open portions 15; the yokes 20 forming no impediment to this operation, since their fingers 22, 23 merely extend between the rollshafts and the platen, 7

l and do not interfere with a movement of the toll shafts away from the platen. Either set of rolls may he ornittedif desired, in some cases.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:

1. In a typewriting machine provided with a platen and n platen frame, the combination with two sets of rolls running upon the platen, one set in advance of the other, two spring-pressed shafts whereon the rolls are mounted, and pivoted arms for supporting the roll shafts, of a rockshaft connected to a key and having cams thereon, and a plurality of yokes extending from said rock shaft to said roll-sl1afts and engageable by said cums to draw said rollshafts and rolls from the platen.

2. In :1 typewriting machine provided with a platen and a platen frame, the combination of two sets of rolls run ning upon the platen, one in advance of the other, two

shafts whereon the rolls are mounted, a rod mounted upon the platen frame between said sets of rolls, arms pivoted upon said rod and supporting the roll shafts, springs pressing the shafts towards the platen, a rock shaft connected to'a key and having cams thereon, and a plurality of yokes extendingfrom said rock-shaft and movable by said cams away from the platen and having'menns to draw said roll shafts and rolls from the platen against the tension of said springs.
