To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ERNEST W. SWARTHOUT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in the county of Dearborn and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guy'Anchors, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object an improved construction of guy anchor suitable for use under all the conditions incident to devices of this character, and simple and durable in construction and cheap to manufacture, as well as efficient in operation for the intended use.

With this object in View, the invention consists in certain constructions of the parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which;

Figure 1 shows one of my improved guy anchors at the bottom of a hole dug to receive it and illustrates the plate of the anchor in its initial position after it has been slipped in the hole. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the anchor set at the bottom of the hole ready to be covered with earth. for tamping up. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the anchor.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The plate or base 1 of my improved anchor may be constructed of cast iron or any other metal or material suitable for the purpose for which devices of this character are intended and its specific shape is highly essential to the practicability of the device. It will be seen that the said plate is slightly dished, so as to assume a substantial concave-convex form as a whole, it is provided with two substantially parallel side edges 2, with a substantially blunt and rounded end 3 and an extended and somewhat pointed opposite end or nose 4. It is also formed with a central boss '5 formed with an opening 6 through which one end of the rod 7 is loosely accommodated, and

undisturbed, as illustrated in Fig. 2 and will also tend to catch the opposite end 3 of the plate into earth at the other side of the hole. The hole is then filled gradually with earth tamping up the same as it is filled.

From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is obvious that I have provided a very simple and cheap, as well as eiiicient construction of guy anchor which will not move or creep when strain is placed upon the rod 7. It is light and strong, and can be readily set by any workman, whorcannot fail to set it right, if he tamps it at all, because by tamping the plate the sharp nose will be driven into undisturbed or solid earth Where it will hold firmly as before specified.
