FOUNTAIN RULING-PEN.

To all whom fit may concern:

lle it known that I, CHARLES 1I. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fountain Ruling-Pens, of which the following is aspecification.

This invention relates to fountain ruling pens designed more particularly for use by draftsmen, but capable of other uses.

One object of the invention is to provide means for feeding ink from a hollow handle or reservoir to a point near the nibs of the pen and to provide means whereby the nibs may be adjusted toward and from each other to make a light or heavy line.

Another object is to provide a pen that will feed ink in the required quantity to permit comparatively long and heavy lines to be drawn Without requiring refilling of the pen, as is the case with an ordinary ruling pen.

These and other objects are attained -by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:-

Figure l is a longitudinal section of a pen made in accordance with my invention, the reservoir for containing the ink being broken away. Fig. 2 is a detail plan view of the upper side of the pen and showing the ink duct in dotted lines. Fig. 3 lis a central longitudinal section through the reservoir and pen.

Referring to the drawings for a more particularv description of my invention, the numeral l designates the' hollow holder or reservoir for containing the ink, and 2 is the pen portion of the device provided with a plug or stopper 3 fitting the reservoir portion 1 and extending outward to form the flexible members 4 and 5. These two members are adjustable toward and from 4each other by means of a thumb screw 6-passing through a lug 7 on the member 4 and a similar lug 8 on the member 5. An ink duct 9 extends through the plug 3 and terminates at a point 10 near the nibs a of the pen, said Specification of Letters Patent.

duct preferably extending through the mem ber 4 of the pen. The ink duet 9 is of a-size to permit the ink to flow read-ily to the pen when the. nibs are in contact with the paper, owing to the surface attraction of the paper for the ink, even when the nibs n. of the peuare adjusted to form a comparatively heavy line.

It is to be noted that the inl: duet 9 is upwardly curved at the point b and downwardly curved, as at o, as it nears its terminal discharge end. 'llie result ot' this curvature is that the ink in flowing from the fountain 1 must take 'an inclined course to arrive at the dis- V order, and can be quickly cleaned by passing a wire or similar cleaning device through the ink duct.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:-

The herein described fountain ruling penv consisting of a reservoir for the ink, a detachable pen section secured to said reservoir, said pen section comprising two members. each provided with lugs, an adjusting screw passing through said lugs to adjust the nibs toward and from each other and said pen 'section provided with :In ink duct communicating with the reservoir and extending info the pen section said ink duct being curved outwardly at its rear portion and inwardly at its front portion and terminating at a point near the nibs of the pen, substantially as described.
