JOSEPH WALTER HAWKINS, OF PASSAIO, NEW JERSEY.
WATER-COLOR BRUSH- Specificatidn of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1907.
Application filed April 6, 1906. $erial No- 310,282.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that l, JosEPH WALTER HAW- KINS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Passaic, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and 1m roved Water Color Brush, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved water color brush more especially designed for use in making wash drawings, and arranged to enable the user to readily apply the color with one brush and give the desired gradations of tone with a second brush.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a art of this specification, in which similar cllaracters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of an ordinary water color brush; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the attachment for the water color brush shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the attachment in position on the water color brush; Fig. 4 is a front end view of the attachment; Fig. 5 is an edge view of the same, and Fig. 6 is an enlarged cross section of the improvement on the line 6-6 of Fig. 3.
The water color brush illustrated in Fig. 1, consists of the usual handle A provided at one end with a ferrule B in which is secured the brush proper C of sable or other hair. The attachment D for the water color brush shown in Fig. 2, consists of a fiat piece of sheet metal D formed at one side into a ferrule D in which is secured a brush proper D of sable or of other hair, and on the other side of the piece D is formed'a sleeve D, preferably split in the direction of its length, and adapted to be slipped over the ferrule B of the water color brush. The rear end of the sleeve D is provided on opposite sides with rearwardly extending integral lugs each provided with a struck-up rong or point D extending inwardly and a apted to be pressed into the wood of the handle A, so as to securely hold the attachment D in position on the ordinary water color brush.
By reference to Figs. 2 and 3, it will be seen that the ferrule D and its brush D are diverging relative to the sleeve D and, consequently, when the attachment D is applied to the water color brush A then the two brushes proper C and D are spaced apart and slightly diverged, and either of the brushes can be readily used by the operator having hold of the handle A. Thus for making wash drawings, for instance, the brush proper C is employed for applying the color, while the brush proper D contains water to give the desired gradations of tone to the drawing by the brush proper C.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by the construction described, an ordinary water color brush may be readily provided with the attachment carrying a second brush used for applying water to the wash drawing,
and it is evldent that by a slight turning of the handle A in the hand of the user, either of the brushes proper C or D can be brought into active use.
The device is very simple and durable in construction, can be cheaply manufactured and readily applied to ordinary water color brushes as now constructed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A water color brush comprising the handle, the brush and the ferrule connecting the handle and the brush and a plate having at one side a ferrule provided with a brush,
and at the other a sleeve adapted to be slipped over the ferrule of the brush proper, said sleeve being splitthroughout its length and provided with rearwardly extended lugs having prongs for engaging the handle.
2. A water color brush comprising the handle, the brush and the ferrule connecting the handle and the brush, and a plate having at one side a ferrule provided with a brush, and at the other a sleeve adapted to be slipped over the ferrule of the brush proper, said sleeve and ferrule of the plate diverging at their outer ends.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH WALTER HAWKINS.
