Description

PAVTENTED JUNE 11, 1907. E. s. MoLEAN. LAMP BURNER. APPLIUATION FILED 001225, 1906.-
UNITED STATES PATENT orrrcn.
LAMP-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1907.
Application filed October 25,1906. Serial No- 340,590.
To LLZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND S. MoLEAN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Tower Hill, in the county of Shelby and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Burners, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to new and useful improvement in lamp burners and more particularly to burners for displaying signals and for like purposes.
The invention aims primarily to provide a burner in which the oil shall burn in a long flame, and which when used in connection with'signals and directed vertically across the lens will heighten the color values to be displayed.
The invention aims as a further object to provide a burner which shall gather a minimum degree of. lirt, which may be easily and quickly cleaned and which shall burn for a comparatively long period of time without the necessity of attention.
The invention finally aims to provide a burner which shall be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and practical and efficient in use.
The detailed construction will appear in the course of the following description in which reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, like numerals designating like parts throughout the several view, wherein,
Figure 1, is a front elevation of a burner constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view thereof from front to rear, the reflector and support being omitted. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, the section being from side to side. Fig. 4 is a top plan view thereof.
. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the detached upper section of the Wick tube casing. Fig. 6 is an elevation-partly in section of the wick tube and lower portion of the casing therefor, and Fig. 7 is a top plan view of the reflector and burner support.
Referring specifically to the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 designated a suit ably supported and constructed reflector from which depends a horizontal annular collar 2, by which the reflector is supported upon the burner proper. The latteris constructed in two sections, a lower section 3, and an upper section 4. In the preferred embodiment of the invention. the sections after being assembled as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 are brazed together. is formed with a constricted portion 5 which is threaded as at 6, for insertion into the oil font A as will be readily understood and as is shown in Fig. 1. A vertical annular wick tube 7 is brazed to the bottom of the constricted portion 5 communicating exteriorly thereof and adjacent said constricted portion an annular shoulder 8 is afforded against which the upper edge of the oil font bears.
The upper section 4 embodies an annular base portion 9 designed to interfit the lower section 3 as above intimated. The base por tion 9 is formed with a central opening 1.0, the material surrounding said opening and imposed upon said base portion, being shaped to form a casing 11 for the wick tube 7 and having in the preferred embodiment of the invention four equi-sized inclined side walls 12 designed to direct the outside air against the flame from the wick. The walls 12 along their upper edges are bent to form an integral closure provided with a central wick opening 14 through which the wick projects in order to assure a flame of increased length.
The wick tube 7 terminates short of the plate 13 and serves as a guide in directing the Wick through the opening 14 therefor.
The casing 11 constructed as above de- The lower section 3 I scribed possesses the shape of the frustum of a pyramid and the refuse oil is designed to flow down the inclined sides 12. Means are provided for intercepting the flow of oil comprising a plurality of suitably shaped open- -mgs 15, preferably arranged at the angles of the side walls 12in vertical series and overlying one another so that it is impossible for the oil or grease to flow in a straight line without being interrupted by the openings and flowing therethrough into the interior of the chamber 11.
It is preferred to employ a circular or square wick, which is raised and lowered in the tube 7 by conventional means such as a spur wheel 16, working in a vertical slot 17 and carried upon a transverse shaft 18 journaled in the walls of the lower portion 3. The lower edge of the section 4 is designed to frictionally bear upon the shaft 18 and to serve as a brake for said shaft to prevent any accidental rotation thereof and consequent displacement of the wick.
In Fig. 3, I have shown an embodiment of the invention in which the wick tube 7 is provided at its lower end with a flared extension 19 designed to project into the font and to permit of the centering and more ready intro duction of the Wick thereinto, in order to avoid the objection of the Wick catching against a sharp edge and becoming bent or cramped so as to be retarded in its adjustment as heretofore.
The burner is readily adaptable for use as a cigar lighter, or in any place requiring a Well defined, but subdued light and is designed to burn for a comparatively long period of time Without attention or replenishing. It Will be readily understood that the pyramidical outline of the Wick tube casing Will cause the light to burn in a long Well defined flame. It Will be alsoapparent that the provision of the apertured side Walls prevent the oil from gathering and accumulating dirt upon the outside of said casing. The burner may be used with a chimney or Without a chimney and With a reflector in accordance With the circumstances of use.
l/Vhile the elements herein shown and described are Well adapted to serve the functions set forth, it is obvious that various tions, shape and arrangement of the several parts Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having fully described my invention I claim:
A lamp burner comprising a section having a central opening in its base and a Wick tube carried thereby and registering With said central opening, a second section superimposed upon said first named section and being formed With a plurality of inclined perforated Walls inclosing said Wick tube, the Walls of said second section being bent at their upper ends to form a closure slightly above the upper edge of said Wick tube and provided With a central Wick opening.
In testimony whereof I aflix' my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
