IMPROVEMENT IN NIGHT-LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 189,100, dated April 3, 1877 application filed March 12, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY W. HUNTING- TON, of Williamsburg, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Night-Lamp, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved lamp. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the chimney-holding device.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to that class of lamps that are provided with a very small wick-tube, and are intended for burning through the night; and it consists in the arrangement of a chimney-holder of simple construction, and in an arrangement of the wick-tube by which the flame is located at a distance above the oil.
Referring to the drawing, A is the body of the lamp, which contains the oil, and upon the neck of which is placed a collar, B, to which is attached the vertical tube 0, that is threaded internally at its upper end to receive the burner D. This burner consists of a tube, a, which extends centrally throughthe threaded part b. Arms 0, attached to the part b, and extending horizontally, are provided with fingers or clips, that spring over the flange on the lower end of the chimney d and retain it in place. The main portion of the tube a extends downward from the part 1) into the tube 0, and that portion of the tube a that extends upward into the chimney is provided with a slot, 6, for introducing a pin, for adjusting the wick.
The advantages claimed for my improvement are, that by placing the upper end of the wick-tube a considerable distance above the surface of the oil in the lamp the oil is not heated, and gas is not generated, and, conse-. quently, danger is avoided. It is simple and inexpensive in its construction, and by the use of a chimney of suitable length smoking is avoided Without using many of the devices common to larger and more complicated burners.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The collar B, having the tube 0, the burner D, provided with arms 0 for holding the chimney, and having the long wick-tube a, in combination, substantially as herein shown and described.
