itiui HENRY S. OTIS, OF PRESCOTT, WlSCONSlN, ASSIGNOR TO HIMS'ELF AND JOHN GREEN.
Letters Patent No. 85,607,dated Ja/n/ua/ry 5, 1869.
DPROVEMENT IN GATES.
The Schedule'refen'ed to in these Letters Patent andlmak'lng part of the sama.
To ail whom (it may conce/m Be it known that I, HENRY. S. OTIS, of Prescott, in the county of Pierce, and State of Wisconsin, have in vented new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
' This invention relates to an improved gate, and'consists mainly in the employment of a spring peculiarly arranged' for the purpose of opening it, the construction being such that the gate is held in position, when closed, by means of a catch, which is operated through the Amediuin of a foot-lever, as will be fully described hereinafter.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view,
Figure 2, a side elevation,
Figure 3, a plan view, and V,
Figure 4, a sectional View of my improved gate.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make'and use the same, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and man# ner of operation. i 4
A represents the base-beam, provided with the groove a, in which the bottom of the gate slides.
B represents a section of the fence provided with the guides b l); by means of which the upper part of the gate is sustained in place.
C represents the gate-post.
D represents a spring, of suitable construction, securely attached, at one end, to the under side ofthe beam A, which is so arranged, in the recess A provided for it, that the' gate E, in closing, causes .it to assume a perpendicular position.
F represents a spring-catch, which engages with the catch enpon the gate E when the gate is closed.
H represents a foot-lever, having the projection h resting upon thespring-catch F, as is clearly shown in g. 4.
Theoperation of my improved gate is as follows:
A It is closed by hand, the gate being drawn up towards the post until the catch hooks over the springcatch F. By this operation the spring D is forced into a perpendicular direction, and bears strongly against the gate.
.When it is desired to openthe gate, it is simply necessary to depress Vthe foot-lever upon either side. By this means the catch F is disengaged from the catch e, and the gate is thrown open by the force exerted by the spring in returning to its natural position.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What Iclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A gate, of .substantially the described construction,
when operated by means of the spring D, catch F, and
foot-lever H, -as and for the purpose set forth.
This specication signed and witnessed, this 2d day of November, 1868.
HENRY S. OTIS. Witnesses:
FRANCIS Hoym, J cnn GREEN.
