Description

PATENT FFICE.
VJAMES W. MGLEAN, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
IMPROVED GATE-LATCH.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,326, dated June 5, 1866.
To all whom t mag/concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. MCLEAN, ot" Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State ofIndiana, have invented certain new and usei'ul Improvements in the Construction and Arrangement of Gate-Latches; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description of' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters marked thereon.
Figure l shows the latch in its position upon the gate, having the handles Withdrawn from the same. Fig. 2 shows the catchpiece or latch. Fig. 3 shows the cover or top ot' the case. Fig. 4 shows the under part of the case. Fig. 5 shows the edge of the latch with the handles in place.
A is the latch 5 B, the top, and C the bottom orunder part, ofthe case or latch-frame.
D is an inclined projection upon the upper arm of the latch A, and is operated upon by Y the pin G for the purpose of raising the latch,
and serves as a stop or catch in holding` the gate closed.
Eis an inclined projection upon the lowerV arm of the latch A, and is designed to bring the latch down over the pin G, so that the catchprojection D covers the same when the gate is shut.
H is the handle by which the latch is oper ated in opening the gate.
Thei'ollowing is the operation of the latch The latch, heilig' operated bythe handle H, turns upon ifs axis, being held by the cases B and (l, between which it operates, raising the catch-projection B off from over the pin G, allowing the gate to swing open. In shutting the gate, as the saine is swung together the catch-projection D strikes the catch-pin G and is thrown up until the pin G is passed by the same, and, striking the projection E, throws the same down, bringing the eatch-{n'ojection D down over the catch-pin G, thus holding the gate firmly. The closing oi' the gate or the fastening of the same is secured by constructing' the projection E so that the rebound caused by the concussion of the pin G will be in a vertical direction, the required angle being about forty-tive degrees, as is well understood.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Paten t, is-
The latch A', with projections D and E, when constructed and operated substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
,I JAMES W. MCLEAN. Witnj'ases ELLIOTT S. PERKINS,
W. H. HAsELToN.
