SASH-LOCK.

To all LU/710777, it may concern:

Be it known that I, INILLIAiii STEPHENS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Redding, in the county of Shasta and State of California, have invented. a new and Improved Sash-Lock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to sash locks and is particularly useful in Connection with win dows having sliding sashes.

The object of the invention is to produce a lock or latch of simple construction, which will enable either the upper or lower sash to be locked in an open or closed position.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is an elevation, showing a portion of the j amb of a casing, a part of the inner bead being represented as broken away Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2-2 of F 1; Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1., but showing the sashes in position; Fig. 4 is a view showing the lock case as viewed from the inner side, a portion of the case being broken away; and Fig. 5 is a perspective showing a modified form which the bolts of the lock may take.

Referring more particularly to the parts, 1. represents a window casing presenting a j amb 2 upon which beads 3, 4, 5 are attached, which guide sashes 6, 7 so as to slide vertically therein in the usual manner. The bead 3 is the inside bead and the sash 6 is the inside and lower sash. At a suitable point, the jamb of the easement is provided with a recess in which there is set the case S of a lock, the said case presenting a face plate 9 which is set flush with the j amb, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3. This face plate 9 is formed with an outwardly disposed channel 10, which extends vertically across the plate and registers accurately with the parting bead 4, so that it, in effect, constitutes a con tinuation or extension of the parting bead of the lock.

On the interior of the case 8 I provide lock ing dogs 1.1 and 12, and these dogs are pivotally mounted at the points 13, 14 respec tively, near the middle line of the lock case.

The dog 12 projects upwardly, as indicated, while the dog 11 projects downwardly. At the extremity of the dog 12 the face plate 9 of the lock case is provided with a circumferentially disposedslot 15, which extends through the side wall of the channel 1.0, as shown most clearly in Fig. 1., and a similar slot 16 is provided in thelower portion of the case. The extremities of both the dogs 11 and 1.2 are provided with laterally projeeting toes 17 which, when the sashes are not locked, lie within the channel 10; the dog 12 is in this condition as illustrated in Fig. 1, while the dog 1.1 is represented as projecting into the path of the edge of the sash and lying displaced from the channel. In order to enable the dogs to be drawn in or out, so as to lock the sashes in a manner which will appear more fully hereinafter, I provide links 18 which are attached respectively to the dogs and are operated by lock mechanism 19 controlled by a key 20 of any common form which is adapted to be inserted through separate keyholes 21 and 22 which are formed in the face plate and the inner bead 3. From this arrangement, it should be understood that the two dogs 11 and 12 are independently operated.

The toes 17 are adapted to engage with keepers 23 which are set in recesses formed in the inner or adjacent edges of the sashes, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3. These keepers are formed preferably of stamped metal, and

are formed near their outer sides each with a transverse lip 24. These lips lie close to the face of the jamb as illustrated in Fig. 2. There may be as many of these keepers in either sash as desired, and one of these keepers should be placed at the point which will lie opposite the corresponding toe when the 5 sash is closed, enabling the sash to be locked in closed position. It should be understood that when it is desired to lock one of the sashes in a fixed position, and open, the sash will be moved until one of its keepers comes opposite the position of the dog controlling that sash, whereupon the key will be applied in the lock in such a way as to project'the toe of the dog outwardly from the channel 10 so that it engages with the keeper, passing sidewise of the sash or laterally into the keeper. The engaging edges of the toes 17 are provided near their extremities each with a lip 25, as illustrated most clearly in Fig. 2. In passing laterally into the keeper, this lip slides behind the rib or lip 24 of the keeper, and while the toe prevents the sash from being raised or lowered, the lip 25 also prevents the sash from being forced away from the jamb of the casing. In this connection, it should be understood that if it is attempted to force the sash laterally as suggested, the lip 24 will engage with the lip 25 and prevent such amovement.

In Fig. 5 I illustrate a construction of the locking dog which I may adopt instead of the dogs 11 and 12; this dog is simply a bar 26 which is mounted in the casing in any suitable manner so that it may slide longitudinally, the extremity of the dog being provided at a suitable point with a laterally projecting finger 27 of similar construction to the toes 17 described above.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A sash lock comprising a case adapted to be set in a window casing and having a transverse channel adapted to aline with the parting strip of said casing, said case having slots formed therein, locking dogs mounted in said case and having toes normally disosed in the interior of said channel, means for actuating said dogs to advance said toes in said slots whereby they may engage the sashes, said toes'having each a projecting lip at the extremity thereof.

2. In combination, a window casing, a sash lock having a case set into said casing, a looking dog mounted in said case and having a laterally projecting toe normally disposed within said case, said toe having a projecting lip formed at the extremity thereof, a sash mounted in said casing and having a keeper set in the edge thereof, said dog being adapted to rotate with respect to said sash to engage said keeper, said keeper having a lip formed therein adjacent to said dog and affording means for locking said sash against lateral movement from the easement.

3. In combination, a window casing presenting beads and a parting strip therebetween, a lock case set in the jamb of said casing and having a transverse channel formed therein registering with said parting strip and constituting a continuation thereof,said case having slots therein extending through the wall of said channel, locking dogs mounted in said case and having toes normally lying within said channel and adapted to rotate into said slots, sashes guided between said beads and said parting strip, said sashes having keepers mounted in the edges thereof adjacent to said parting strip, said keepers having each a lip formed therein adjacent to the face of said casing, said toes having each a lip formed therein adapted to come into position behind the lip of the keeper engaged thereby, whereby said sashes are locked against lateral movement from said casing.

4. In combination, a case ada ted to be attached to a window casing an having a transverse channel adapted to aline with the parting strip of said casing, dogs attached within said case and having toes normally disposed in said channel, keepers adapted to be attached to sashes adjacent to said parting strip, said keepers having transverse lips respectively, said case having slots permitting said toes to move into engagement with said keepers, said toes having lips at the edge thereof engaging behind said transverse lips respectively.
