LOCK.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL SEGAL, a citizen of the United States, residin at'New York city, in the county of New ork and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fastening devices for swinging or sliding doors and has'for 1 0-'its object toprovide a simple and practioally hnrglar-proof article of this character,
that will effectually operate to.prevent the doorfrom being forced or pried open.
A still further object-is toprovide a deuvice of this character that may be used in combination with the ordinary key actuated.
look now on the market,
' To these ends the invention consists in the novel details ofconstruction and 'combination of parts more 'fully hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying'drawings forming a part of this specification in which like numerals designate like partsin all the views :.Eigure l is a sectional view showing my improved fastening device secured in position on a.door,'the section being taken on-the line 1-1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a hori Zontal cross sectional view taken on the line of Fig. 1 and showing the device connected to an ordinary Yale lock. Fig. 3 is a detail pers tive view of the keeper. Fig. 4 is a detag perspective view of the bolt.
My improved fastening device is composed of two principal parts namelythe' keeper 1 which is;secured to the edge of the door jamb 8, and the vertical bolt 3 mounted in a casing 4, which is secured to the door 5.
40 The keeper comprises the angle plate 6 hair'- inggthe countersunk apertures 7, throu h which the fastening screws 9.pass andt e cars 10 apertured as at 11, and adapted when inits closed position: to receive the 45 bolt 31 The bolt preferably square in cross section, is conveniently supported and slidably mounted within the casing 4 and comprises the bodyportion 12, from the front ofwhich projectsthe hooks 13 which 50-.adaptedxto engage The bolt 3 is raised and lowered from within the apertures 11 Specification of Letters Patent.
within the room by means ofthe latch knob Patented June24, 1M3.
14 which is provided on its inner end with an operating finger 15 which operates within the slot 16 cut in the rear end of the bolt. A spring 17 held within the casing and engaging the rear end of the bolt, is adapted to hold the bolt in its raised posit-io'n.
A look 18, preferably of the Yale type and arranged in the outer end of the face of the door, is adapted to actuate the bolt from the outside by means of the key 19. This is ficcompiished by means of the connecting 'bar 20 secured at one end to the lock barrel 21 and at its other end to the operating finger 22 which also operates within the bolt slot 16. The belt 3, it will be noted, is also provided with the shoulders 23 which are adapted to engage with the shoulders 24.
foisned onthe inside of the casingfor properiy guiding the bolt in its up and down movement and for further securing the parts From the foregoing it will be seen that' by the use of a device constructed. in accordance with my invention that es door may be securely fastened at a plurality of points by a vertical keeper and bolt and in such a manner that it will be practically impossible to separate the door from its sash without first destroying the fastening means.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and arran'gements of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and therefore I do not" wish to be limited to such features except as may be required by the claim.
What is claimed as new is:
A lock comprising a casing provided with openings and having an interiorly located ho er, a bolt slidably mounted in the casing' along said .shoulder and having hooks adapted to move transversely across said openings, said bolt being provided with a slot located at its inner edge, a spring lo cated in the casing and bearing against the bolfi to hold the same against the sheulder, In testimony whereof I afix my signa -tum said spring adapted tq enter the slot to hold in presence of two witnesses. the hooks beyond vthe edges of, the openlngs,
and a member 'mounted for turning move SM L SEGAL' ment in the casing and having a. finger Witnesses:
adapted to ententhe slot/to move the bolt GEO. A. BYRNE, along the shoulder. 1 JOHN A. DONEGAR.
