UNITE-D- s'rA'r s PATENT OFFICE.-
HUBERT WITTE, OFSTQ OUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR To ST. LOUIS CAR QOMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION.
' DOOR OPENING. AND CLOSING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7, 1907.
I Application filed October 11, 1906. Serial No. 338391.
To an whom it may concern:
Be it known. that I, HUBERT Wrr'ria, a citizen of the United States of America, residing int'he cityof St. Louis, inthe State of'Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Openin and Closing Devices, of which the following is a full, clear,
' and exact description, reference being had to this speci cation.
My inventionrelates to a device .for o ing and closing doors and more particu arly doors used u'pon the platforms of railway cars, the object of the invention beingto provide a door opening and closingmechanism that may be operated by one of the crew of a the accom anying drawings, forming part of car, for-instancethe conductor or motorman anism in the position assume 7 is in opened position. Fig. III is in part, a
to permit the entrance or exit of passengers vertical section taken through the end of the by a partition Bend the 4 ing provided for the purpose of furnishing a ing car and in plart an elevation of the door operating meo anism and .the door in closed pdsition. Fig. IV is an enl'ar ed vertical section taken on line I-V'IV, i III.
A designates the platform a railway'cai' which is surmounted by a front wall containplat orm A is subdivided tocprovide a passagewayleading to the interior of the. car:
from thesteps of theplatfo'rm, as-indicated at D, this division being dpreferably efiected" .01 F, the doorbewall for said passageway and also for the purpose of permitting the person who is to 0perate, the door mechanism to pass from t e passageway D of the platform to the other portion of the platform which he occupies, during the operation'of the door.
1 design at 2 to the platform'post C and is adapte to tr'on- ;toward the partition E;
3 -isfiasecond doorsection that is connected by hinges-f4- to the 'first named section, the.
(i'perated thereby is osts B and C. The space above the- ,zontal slot E bein provide ates a door section that ishin ed.
hinges being located at the outer sides of the door sections, in order that when the two door sections are moved inwardly the second door section 3 may become'folded' against the outer side'of the first doorsection 1. Above the door consisting of the sections 1 and 3 is a channel shaped track rail 5.
6 is a guide arm secured to the door section 3 and to which is journaled an. anti-friction roller 7 that is adapted to travel in the track rail for the purpose of guiding and steadying the? door section 3 during the period of moving the sectional door from its closed to its 0 en and folded position and vice versa. v8 esignates a rock shaft that is vertically positioned in the space above the platform A occupied by the person who is to operate the door 0 crating means, this rock shaft being prefera ly journaled in boxes, one. of which,
as indicated at 9, may be attached to the platform wall post B and the other of which may be mounted upon the platform as seen at 10.
11 is ano crating handle fixed to the rock shaft 8. T e rock shaft preferably extends beneath the platform and it has fixed to it a crankarm 12 v 13 is a link pivoted at one end to thecrank arm 12.
- 14,is a vertical rock shaft located adjacent to the partition E and preferably mounted in a box 15 secured to sald artition and a box 16 mounted u on the atform. The rock shaft 14, like t e rock s aft 8, preferably extends beneath the platform and has fixed to it a crank arm 17 that receives the connection of the connecting link 1'3 (see full lines Fig. III and dotted lines Figs. I and II.) 18 designates'a lever arm fixed to the rock shaft 14 and. extending therefrom through the partition E to the passageway D, a horiin-said partition for this. purpose see Fig. III.) The lever arm 18 is connected by a rule-joint at 19v to a link 20 that is in turn pivotedat 21. to aswmg arm '22 loosely connected to the connecti door section 3 b l attachment at 23 to a bracket 24 which is permanently fastened to said door section.
25is a guide bracket mounted in a horizontal position upon the partition E at the side thereof facing jthe passageway D and which I contains a channel shaped uideway-26.
2'7'is a guide armp vota 1y connected to the connecting link and the swing arm 22 at the point 21' and provided at its other end with an antifriction roller 28 (see dotted linesFigs. I to III inclusive) that is adapted quence'of this movement of the lever arm a 1 pull is effected upon theconnecting link 20 and the swing arm 22, the rule-joint between the lever arm and connecting link being broken during this action. As a consequence the swinging arm 22 is caused to exert a pull uponthe door sections 3 and 1, so that the former is folded against the latter and the two sections are moved into the folded and 0 en position illustrated in Fig. II. During 1 -t is folding and opening of the door sections the section 3 is properly guided relative to the section 1 through the medium of the guide arm 6 and its anti frietion roller 7 operating in conjunction with'the'guide rail 5. Also during the movement of thelever arm,
connecting link and swing arm the move'-. ment of the connectin link and swing arm v is directed by the gui earm 27 having thev anti-friction roller 28. that travels in the guideway 26 of the bracket 25. In closin the door the movement of the parts is in al essentials the reverse of that described in connection with the opening of the door and therefore more detailed description on this point is deemednnnecessary.
I claim:. 1. In a door opening and closing device,
the combination with a door, of a swing-arm As a conseconnected to said door, a rock-shaft, lever connection between said 'rockshaft and swin -arm a, uide bracket 'a uide 'arm' pivoted to said lever connection and slidably fitted to said bracket, and means for operating said rock-shaft, substantially as set forth.
2. In a door opening and closing device, the combination with a door,of a swing-arm connected to said door, a rock shaft, a lever fixed tosaid rock shaft, a connecting link pivotally connecting said lever and swingarm, a uide arm pivoted link and swing-arm at a point of their connection, a guide in which said guide arm operates, and means for operating said rock-shaft, substantially as set forth.
3. In a door opening and the combination'with a sectional door, of a swing-arm-connected to one of the sections of said door, a rock shaft, means for"operat ing said rock shaft, a lever fixed tosaid rock to said connecting it 60 closing devlce,
shaft, a connecting link pivoted to said swing arm and havln rule-101m OOIIIIGOtlOIl with said ever, a guide bracket, and a guide arm having pivotal connection with said swing-arm and link and slidably fitted to said guide bracket substantially as set forth. 4.. In a door opening and closing device,
the combination with a sectional door, of .a-
swing-arm connected to one of the sections of said door, a rock shaft, means for oper-' ating said rock shaft, a lever fixed to said rock shaft, a connecting-link pivoted to said swing-arm, a guide bracket having a guideway therein, and a guide arm pivoted to saidswing-arm connecting link at the point of connection thereof and arranged to operate .in the guideway of said guidebracket, substantially as set forth. 7
