'Upon the platform, preferably the area thereof directly in rear of the middle casing 1450f the rear end of the car body, I provide a conductors station, which I prefer shall be toa suitable degree separated from the balance of the platform, an'd'to this end I provide a railing or other'suitable division wall, 22, whichpreferably extends from the edge of the casing 14 adjacent the doorway 13, a suitable distance rearward and thence transversely of thec'ar in an inward direction,to substantially longitudinal abutment with the edge of the doorway 12, preferably on substantially the transverse line of the upright 20.
The space thus partially inclosed, and indicated at 23, I term the conductors station, and by the means described Iprovide a'pl'ace for the conductor where he may be free from interference of passengers and may conveniently collect the fares of entering passengers and operate the mechanism under preferably making the gates 21 operable only from the conductors station, and placing it within the power of the conductor to lock either door 15 or 16 against being opened by the passengers although permitting them to open such doors under ordinary conditions.
In the specific construction illustratively shown the door movements are controlled from a crank stand 25 provided within the confines of the conductors station, such stand in'the embodiment shown comprising a vertical standard or casing having concentrically arranged therein a central shaft 26, and two surrounding sleeves, or hollow shafts, 27 and 28, such shafts being at their upper ends provided respectively with superposed crank wheels or handles 26, 27 and 28, of successively increasing diameter. The shaft 26 and the surrounding rotatable sleeves or hollow shafts extend belowthe platform 11 of the car, the outer shaft member being the shortest and the inner shaft 26 being the longest in projection below the flOOl'.. Upon the extremity of shaft 26 I provide a crank lever 30, connected by link 31 with a cross head 32, the opposite extremities of which have connected thereto links 33 respectively connected with cranks 31 respectively secured to the upright rods 20, 20 carrying the gates 21. It will be apparent that partial rotation of handle 26' opens or closes the gates.
The hollow shaft 27 is at its lower end suitably connected with the body-entrance closing door 15, to move the latter, such connections as herein shown comprising a sprocket wheel 35 geared by a chain 36 to a sproeket'37, mounted upon the lower extremity of vertical shaft 38 extending up through the casing 14:, and at its upper end provided with a pinion 39 meshing with the rack bar 40 suitably secured to the door, preferably adjacent its point of sliding support. Obviously rotation of handle 27 through the gearing connection rotates the pinion 39 to move the rack and correspondingly the door in appropriate direction, so that the conductor may open and close the door without leaving his station. I prefer further that mechanism be provided whereby the conductor may look the door against opening, and to this end I provide upon the shaft 27 a ratchet 42, for coaction with which I arrange a pawl l3 mounted upon a vertical shaft extending through the platform 11 and at its upper end carrying a tripping member or foot piece 441. When ever the conductor desires to lock the door to prevent ingress of passengers into the body of the car he moves the foot member 4A in appropriate direction to throw the pawl 4t?) into engagement with the ratchet 42, where it remains until moved back to disengaged position by the conductor, and
after such release the door may be opened by the passenger.
For operating the body-exit closing door 16 I provide corresponding mechanism, the sprocket upon theshaft 28 being indicated by numeral 12 and the remaining connections with the door, similarto those above described, being indicated by like ordinals of references differentiated by the expo-v nent prime p 7 For the protection of passengers against injury by the doors 15 and 16, I provide on each side of the jamb or frame of each body door a grab-handle 4:5 in such arrangement that the hand of a passenger grasping such handle is not in the path of movement of thedoor. .7
In the operation of the car the conductor stands at his station 23, and at any stopping point where the passengers desire to leave the car he opens the door 16 and the gate. 20 both clearing an exit way through the openings 13 and 19. Those waiting to board the carmay freely enter through the unobstructed opening 18, and naturally group themselves about that opening, leaving free for debarking passengers space to alight. Passengers may, therefore, get off while others are boarding the car without confusion or delay.
When all the passed through the gates 21, the conductor closes the gates 21 and may close andlatch the door 16 thereby insuring that no passengers will enter the car through the exit opening. Passengers entering the car pass through the unobstructed entrance passage 18 on to the enlarged platform, and in order to reach the entrance opening 12 in the 'body of the car they'must pass by the station of the conductor, so that he is easily able to collect their fares.

It will be apparent that the arrangement described leaves unobstructed a passage-way from the car-body-exit doorway 13 to the rear portion of the platform so that ii the event any entering passenger should by mistake crowd in through the opening 19, while the gates 21 are open, such Passenger may be directed into the proper entrance way past the conductors station without the ne cessity of getting ed the car or dodging any obstruction, and further passengers who havebeen riding on the rear platform and desire to debark may get off at the proper exit opening 19, avoiding interference with passengers entering through their proper entrance 18. a i

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a car a body, a platform extending across the end of the body, steps extending along one side of the platform, means adjacent the steps dividing the open side into separate entrance and exit openings to the ground, side by side, and both communicating with the steps, a closure for the exit opening, separate exit and entrance openings from the platform to the body of the car, means partially segregating from the'balance of the platform a conductors station located between said separated openings to the body, and means accessible from said conductors station for opening the closure for the exit to the ground.
2. In a car, a platform having separate entrance and exit openings to the ground and separate entrance and exit openings to the body of the car, closures for the two openings to the body of the car and an independent closure for the exit opening to the ground, and means operable from the platform for opening and closing the last said closure.
8. In a car, a platform having separate entrance and exit openings to the ground, and separate entrance and exit openings to the body of the car, a closure for the entrance to the body of the car, a closure for the exit to the ground, means partially segregating from the balance of the platform a conductors station, means operable from said conductors station to open and close the said exit closure, and means operable from said station to prevent the opening of the closure for the entrance to the car body.
4. In a car, a platform having separate entrance and exit openings to the ground at one side, the exit opening being nearest the body of the car, and separate entrance and exit openings to the body of the car, the exit opening being nearest the side openings of the platform, a railing extending from a point adjacent the inner side of the exit opening from the body rearward and thence transversely toward the entrance opening to thebody, and closures for the entrance and exit openings to' the body and means Opel able fronr the"conductors station to control salol closures. i

6. In a car, the combination with a sliding door, means for positively closing said door and a frame therefor, of a pair of grabhandles extending from the edge of the frame with which the door coacts when closed, such grab-handles respectively extending in parallelism to the edges of the door-frame at a suitable distance from the path of travel of the door to prevent the hand of the passenger grasping them from being struck by the door.
7. A street car having a platform with steps along one side thereof, a barrier dividing the steps into entrance and exit passages, a side door controlling at least one,of said entrance and exit passages, and a distant control device having operating connections for the side door at the steps.
8. A street car having an entrance and exit portion provided with a side step, means at the step dividing it into entrance and exit passages, a barrier on the entrance and exit portion arranged to aid in separating the incoming and outgoing passengers, a side door controlling at least one of the entrance and exit passages from the step, a control device adjacent to the barrier, an operating connection between said control device and said side door.
9. A street car having an entrance and exit portion provided with a side step, a vertical post adjacent to the step and forming entrance and exit passages therefor, a side door controlling at least one of said entrance and exit passages, a barrier on the entrance and exit portion arranged to assist in separating the incoming from the outgoing passengers, a controlling device adjacent to the barrier and operating connections between said control device and the side door.
10. A street car having an entrance an exit portion with a side step, a vertical post adjacent to the step forming entrance and exit passages, a side door, a barrier on the platform arranged to assist in separating the incoming from the outgoing passengers, a control device at the prepayment point, and operating connections between said control device and said side door.
11.
