To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, SAMUEL WEINBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Lining Clamps and Supports, of which the fol lowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention is a combination clamp and support to be used in cooking and other stoves for clamping the lining of the fire pot or box and supporting the stove-top above the fire-pot and the oven.

One object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and practical device of this character which may be quickly andeasily adjusted so that it can be used upon any of the various makes of stoves now on the market.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a sectional perspective through a portion of a cooking-stove, showing my'improved combination clamp and support arranged between the oven plate and the stove-top for supporting the latter and also clamping the lining of the fire pot or box. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the parts shown in Fig. 1, but showing the intermediate or connecting member of the device reversed. Fig. 3 is a detail view similar to Fig. 1, showing another use to which the intermediate or connecting member may be put. Fig. 4 isa perspective view of the lower or clamping member of the device. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the intermediate or connecting member, and Fig. 6 is a similar view of the upper or supporting member.

Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes the top, 2 the oven, and 3 the fire box or pot, of a cooking-stove or the like.

My improved combination clamp and sup port is arranged between the oven 2 and the stove-top 1 and is adapted to support the latter and to also clamp the fire-brick liningplates 4 against the front oven-plate 5. The device is secured upon the top oven-plate 6 and has its upper end engaged by the usual cross bar or plate 7 of the stove-top. The cross-bar 7 may be composed of one or two pieces and when composed of two pieces, as illustrated in Fig. 1, their inner abutting ends are both supported by the top of the device.

The combination clamp and support consists of three members 8 9 10, each of which is of substantially right-angular form. The lower or base member 8 engages and is secured upon the top plate 6 of the oven, and its curved or right-angularly projecting end 11 is adapted to enter registering seats or recesses 12, formed in the adjacent upper corhere of the two central sections of the fire-pot lining, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The portion of the member 8 which rests upon the plate 6 is formed with a longitudinally-extending slot 13 to receive a fastening device which secures said member to said plate. This fastening device, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is in the form of a bolt 14, which passes through an aperture in the oven-plate and has a nut 15 upon its lower threaded end. The head of the bolt 14 is adapted to engage any one or a plurality of seats 16, formed in the upper edges of the slot 13, in order that the head of the bolt may be countersunk and in order to prevent the member 8 from slipping longitudinally. The bottom edges 17 of the slots 13 are also beveled or cut away to receive the head of a bolt or similar fastening 18, which adjustably connects the member 9 to the member 8. This intermediate or connecting member 9 has a long arm or end 19 and a short arm or end 20, either of which may be adjustably clamped upon the member 8. In the long arm 19 is formed a longitudinal slot 21, having its outer edges beveled, as at 22, and in the short arm 20 is formed a slot 23. The outer faces of both of the arms 19 20 are formed with transversely-extending ribs or serrations 24, which are adapted to engage similar ribs or serrations 25, formed on the outer face of the long arm or end 26 of the supporting member 10. The short arm or end 27 of this member 10 is flat, so that it may engage the fiat undersurface of the cross-bar or cross-bars 7, and it is of suflicient width to support the ends of both sections of the cross-bar when a two-part cross-bar is used in the stovetop. The long arm 26 of the member 10 is adapted to be adj ustably clamped upon either of the arms 19 and 20 of the member 9 by a bolt or the like 28, passed through a slot or opening 29, formed in the arm 26, andthrough one of the slots 21 23. The slot 29 is formed with seats to receive the head of the bolt 28.

The provision of the ribs 24 25 on the two members 9 10 effectively prevent them from slipping upon each other when bolted together and also removes a portion of the strain from the bolt 28. The provision of the serrations 24 on both of the arms of the member 9 and the making of these arms of an unequal length permits either of them to beclamped upon the member 8, while the other is in an upright position and has the member 10 secured to it. the connecting member 9 to be reversed that is, used ineither of its two positions, (shown in Figs. 1 and 2,) so that the range of adjustment of the supporting member 10 is increased to such an extent that the device may be used upon any size and make of stove.

In using the device the member 9 is clamped by the bolt lS'upon the member 8, and the latter is then clamped by the bolt 14 upon the top of the oven-plate 6, so that the end 11 of said member engages the seats 12 in the iire-pot lining 4 and eii ectively clamps said lining in position. The supporting member 10 is then clamped by the bolt 28 upon the upright arm 01 the member 9 in position to properly support the stove top. The adjustable connection between the members 10 and 9 permits the top or upper end 27 of the former to be adjusted at the proper height for supporting the stove-top; but should the range be too limited when the member 10 is clamped to the short arm 20 of the member 9 said member 9 may be reversed from its position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 1, the long arm 19 thus giving an increased range of adjustment from the member 10. Owing to the provision of the slot 13 in the member 3, the latter may be adjusted longitudinally, according to the size of the lire-pot liningplates, and the bolt 18 may be disposed in any portion of the member 8 to enable the member 9 to be properly positioned thereon. The slots 21 23 also increase the range of adjustment oi the clamp-bolt 18. It will be noted that the connecting member 9 may be swung at any desired angle with respect to the member 8, so that the upper end 27 of the supporting member 10 may be adjusted in any direction in a horizontal plane to enable it to properly support the cross-bar 7 or any other portion of the stove-top 1. The three members of the device are made similar in sh ape that is, of right-angular form-to permit any one of them to be used by itself as a clamp for securing the lining of the fire-pot in position. This use of the connecting member 9 is illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and it will be understood that either of the other two members 8 10 may be similarly used. In Fig. 3 is shown another manner in which one of the members of the device may be secured upon the ovenplate 6. In some makes This construction also enables vided upon the plate 6 and adapted to enter the slot or opening in the clamp member and to receive a cross pin or key 31, which retains the member upon the lug. In some cases where it is desirable to support the stove-top as well as clamp the fire-pot lining the member 10 of the device may be dispensed with. This may be'done when either of the arms 19 20 of the member 9 is of the proper length to support the stove-top.

From the foregoing it will be seen that my improved device may be used in many different ways, and its range of adjustment such that that it may be employed upon stoves of all kinds that are on the market at the present time.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. A device of the character described comprising the clamp member 8 having the short arm 11 and the long arm formed with the longitudinal slot 13, said slot having its longitudinal edges 17 upon the bottom of said arm beveled outwardly and downwardly and its longitudinal edges upon the top of said arm formed with the seats 16. substantially as shown and for the purpose specified.

2. A device of the character described comprising the member 9 having the long and short arms 19, 20 formed with serrated outer faces 24 and with the longitudinal slots 21, 23, the slot 21 in the long arm 19 having its longitudinal edges 22 upon its outer face beveled outwardly, substantially as shown and for the purpose specified.

3. A device of the character described com prising a clamping member formed with the slot 13 having its bottom longitudinal edges 17 beveled outwardly and downwardly and its top longitudinal edges formed with the seats 16 adapted to receive the head of a bolt passed through the slot 13 and to permit the head ofsaid bolt to lie beneath the top of said member, a supporting member having a slot and a bolt passed through the last-mentioned slot and the slot 13 in the clamping member for adjustably securing said members together, said bolt having its head engaged with the beveled edges 17 of the slot 13 and lying within the plane of the bottom of the clamping member.

A device of the character described, comprising a clamping member formed with the slot 13 and having its bottom longitudinal edges 17 beveled outwardly and downwardly and its top longitudinal edges formed with the seats 16 adapted to receive the head of a bolt passed through the slot 13 and to permit the head of said bolt to lie beneath the top of same member, the substantially right-angular reversible supporting member 9 having long and short arms formed with serrated of stoves an apertured stud 0r lug 30 is pro- 1 outer faces and with longitudinal slots, said supporting member being adapted to have the serrated outer face of either of its arms engaged with the top of the clamping member, and a clamping-bolt passed through the alining slots in the two members and having its head engaged with the beveled bottom edges 17 of the slot in the clamping member so that the head of said bolt lies within the plane of the bottom of the clamping member, substantially as set forth.

5. The combination with the stove-top, the fire-box lining and the oven-plate formed with an aperture, of a clamping member having a short arm to engage the said lining and a long arm to engage the top of the ovenplate, said long arm being formed with the longitudinal slot 13 having its bottom longitudinal edges 17 beveled outwardly and downwardly and its top longitudinal edges formed with the seats 16, the bolt 14 passed through the aperture in the oven-plate and. the slot 13 and having its head engaged with one of the seats 16, a stove-top-supporting member having a slot and a roughened surface to engage the top of the clamping member, and the bolt 18 passed through the slots in said members and having its head engaged with the beveled edges 17 of the slot in the clamping member, substantially as shown and described.

6. A device of the character described, comprising a clamping member, a supporting member, a connecting member, each of said members being of substantially right-angular form, and the connecting member being reversible, and means for adjustably connecting the supporting and clamping members to the two arms of the connecting member.

7. A device of the character described, comprising a clamping member, a supporting member, a connecting member, each of said members being of substantially right-angular form, and provided with longitudinal slots, the connecting member'being reversible, and bolts passed through said slots for adjustably connecting said members together, substantially as shown and described.

8. A device of the character described,

comprising a clamping member of substantially right-angular form having a longitudinal slot formed with seats in its edges, a substantially right-angular connecting member having long and short arms formed with longitudinal slots, the outer faces ofsaid arms being serrated, a substantially right-angular supporting member having a slot in one of its arms and serrations upon the outer face of said slotted arm, and clamping-bolts passed through the slots in said members for adjustably connecting them together, substan tially as shown and described.
