UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JNO. R. HATHAWAY AND JNO. P. STRIPPEL, OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA.
PRINTING-PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 8,445, dated October 21, 1851.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, J OHN R. HATHAWAY and JOHN P. S'rRIrPnL, of the city and county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have made a new and useful Improvement on the Printing-Press; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification.
Figure 1, represents a plan or top view, and Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A bed, or plate (A) of such size as may screws and fixtures, in order to raise or lower the cylinder to the height that may be desired, in order to produce a clear and full impression from the form, on the paper. A cylinder C, of any diameter used for printing, to be made of iron or other material suitable for the purpose, and placed in a frame, (D) which is so constructed, in case of a small cylinder being used, that additional weight may be added. The cylinder to work backward and forward over the railway, and raised off the form in re turning, if required, the said frame D working upon two or more Wheels (F) on the railway, for easy motion. The blanket to wrap around the cylinder, and over two separate rollers (WV W) attached to the frame, and to be fastened underneath to the railway, by means of a bar placed crosswise, in order to keep it from moving at that point; and the two ends to be laced together, as shown in the drawings. The said blanket may contain adjustable points for the purpose of book printing, and is provided with a sheet holder (1) as shown in the drawings. A self inking apparatus, (J) attached to the said cylinder frame, to move with it on the same railway, on two or more wheels. The equalizing roller in the said self inking apparatus to be worked to and fro longitudinally by a rod (L) adjusted at a proper degree of inclination for that purpose, and rotated on its axis by a cord (M) or rack and pinion. The sheet flier (N) to lay on top of the inking apparatus, and be attached to the end of the frame D and to reach the whole length of the said inking apparatus. The tape lines (0) (two or more) to be attached to engage (which is fastened at the same place where the blanket is,) and running up between two rollers (P) to extend to the end of the press, (laying just above the sheet fiyer,) and fastened there to springs, also set on a gage for the purpose of adjustment. The sheet flier to be raised in the arc of a circle above the tape lines, by means of a pawl or lever(Q,),when
contact of the sheet with the inking rollers and tape lines, and to keep the sheet atthis angle until it reaches the end of the railway, when it turns over and delivers the sheet on the receiving table (R) by means of a rack and pinion, or pins (S) in the roller of the sheet flier, as shown in the drawings. The bed of the press to be stationary, and the cylinder and inking apparatus, as attached, to work over the form by a double crank, T (by machinery or hand power, rotary or half motion.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Arranging upon a horizontally reciprocating carriage, a blanket-frame D, pressing cylinder C, set of inkingrollers J, and sheet flier N, in such a manner that the two ends of the pressing cylinder shall roll upon the side rails B, then constituting a pair of the carrying wheels of the carriage, and producing a rotary motion of the pressing cylinder as it passes over the type-form, and whereby the requisite motion is given to the blanket; the several parts being constructed and arranged substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.
