JOHNSVILLE, NEW YORK.
WAGON-BODY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 12, 1907.
Application filed May 22,1906. Serial No. 318,154,
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES LEAVITT, a i
citizen of the United States, residing at St.
Johnsville, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented certain I new and useful Improvements in l/Vagoni Bodies, of which the following is a speci'lication. 1
My invention has ful improvements in wagon-bodies, and is designed as an improvement over the wagonbody for which I obtained Letters Patent l January 30, 1906.
relation to new and use- T he object of my invention is the production of a wagon-body constructed with a de tachable top, so that the same may be used closed or open.
With these objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as set forth in the specification and claims hereonto at tached.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like parts are designated by like characters throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional viewof my invention. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional'view of my invention, cut on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction ofthe arrows. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of my invention, showing the mechanism employed to detachably secure the top in position.
My invention is described as follows:
The numeral 1 represents my improved body, which consists of the box 2 and detachable top 3. Said box is mounted on suitable wheels. The rear portion of the box is of such construction that it drops down behind the rear axle and forms a compartment 4, which is provided with a suitable floor 5, upon which the driver stands. Said box 2 is also provided with a suitable floor 6, upon which the packages or other articles to be delivered are arranged, said box being constructed of any desired width or length. My body is provided with a door-opening 7 in the rear thereof for the purposes of gaining access thereto. Said top 3 is provided with a cover 8, made of a solid piece of tin, copper, or other waterproof material. The said compartment 4 is entirely closed at its front end from the floor 6 of said box 2 to the floor 5 of said compartment by a vertical wall 9.
The rear portion of said box is also provided braces 16, the two innermost of which are connected at their extreme upper ends by transverse braces 17, which serve to prevent the said cover 8 from sagging in the middle. Said vertical braces 16 are located a sufficient distance apart to provide convenient windowopenings, in which are removably secured window-frames 18. Secured to the inner faces of said longitudinal base-beams 13, their upper edges protruding somewhat above the upper inner edges of said basebeams, are longitudinal guide-bars 19, provided in their extreme ends with recesses 20,
I the purpose of which will be hereinafter disclosed. When in their normal positions, the lower ends of said window-frames 18 rest on the upper faces of said longitudinal basebeams 13 and their lower inner sides come against the outer sides of said guide-bars 19, which bars prevent lateral displacement of the lower ends of said frames. Upper longitudinal guide-bars 21, secured to the inner sides and near the upper ends of said vertical braces 16, prevent lateral displacement of the upper ends of said window-frames.
Secured to the extreme upper outerparts of said top 3 by four or more vertical supports 23 are longitudinal beams 22, which are connected at their front ends by a front transverse beam 24, provided in its lower edge near its ends with semicircular recesses 24 and at their rear ends by an end transverse beam 24 Located at the rear end of said top 8, their upper ends in contact with the lower edge of said end transverse beam 24 are vertical braces 25, which are secured at their lower beveled ends to outwardly-tapering horizontal supports 26. Said top 3 is also provided at its front end with a window I supports 32. The reins pass over said supports and thence outwardly through said recesses 24 in said front transverse beam 24.
Rigidly connected at their upper ends near the lower ends and to the inner sides of the vertical braces 16, located at the extreme rear and front of said top 3, are vertical elongated plates 33, which are preferably made flat and rectangular oblong in shape, and fulcrumed at their extreme upper ends near the lower ends and to the inner faces of said vertical elongated plates 33 are hooks 34 of suitable construction, which are adapted to engage in staples 35, secured in the inner sides and near the upper ends of lower vertical braces 36, secured to the sides of said box 2 when said top is placed in position on the said box 2. When the top is detached, the said hooks 34 are swung upwardly, when the lower ends pass into the recesses 20 in the ends of said longitudinal guide-bars 19.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a wagon-body 1, the combination of a box 2, the rear portion of said box forming a downwardly-extending compartment 4; seats 12, secured to the inner faces of the walls of said box; a detachable top 3; longi tudinal base-beams 13 located at the base of said top front transverse base-b cam 14, connecting the front ends of said beams; vertical braces, their lower ends secured in said basebeams; longitudinal beams 22, secured to the outer sides and near the upper ends of said vertical braces; a front transverse beam 24, provided in its lower edge and near its ends with recesses 24, connecting the front ends of said longitudinal beams; an end transverse beam 24 connecting the rear end of said longitudinal beams; a cover 8, secured to the top of said longitudinal beams 22; rein-supports, secured to the inner sides of the foremast of said vertical braces 16; a window 27, pivoted to the front end of said top; windowframes 18, adjustably secured in the sides of said top; vertical elongated plates 33, secured to the inner sides of the foremost and rearmost of said vertical braces 16, their lower ends projecting below the ends of said braces hooks 34, fulcrumed at their upper ends to said plates, and staples 35, secured to the inner faces of the side wal s of said box 2, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a wagon-body 1, the combination of a box 2, the rear portion of said box forming a downwardly-extending compartment 4 seats 12, secured to the inner faces of the side walls of said box; a detachable top 3; longitudinal base-beams 13, located at the base of 1 said top; a front transverse beam 14, connecting the front ends of said beams; vertical braces 16, their lower ends secured in said base-beams; longitudinal beams 22, secured to the outer sides and near the upper ends of said vertical braces a front transverse beam 24, provided in its lower edge and near each end with a recess 24, connecting the front ends of said longitudinal beams; an end transverse beam 24 connecting the rear ends of said longitudinal beams; a cover 8,
secured to the top of said longitudinal beams rein-supports 32, secured -to the inner sides of the foremost of said vertical braces 16; a window 27, pivoted in the front end of said top, and window-frames l8, adjustably secured in the sides of said top, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
