Be it known that I, HARRY S. LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tecumseh, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Vehicle- Body, of which the followingis aspecication.

This invention relates to improvements in vehicle-bodies; and one object is to provide a simple device that will protect the occupants of such vehicle from mud or rain.

A further object is to so construct the device that it may be disposed out of the way during fair weather or while a person is entering or alighting from the vehicle.

For a complete understanding of the invention the preferred construction thereof is de-v scribed in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of the same, and in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a vehiclebody, showing the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the seat, showing the wings in open position.A Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.

Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

The invention comprises a pair of extensible side wings 10, arranged, respectively, on each side of the vehicle-body and slidably mounted, so that they may be extended across to close the space between the front edge of the seat and the dashboard. The preferred manner of mounting these slides consists in extending the seat-arms 11 beyond the side of the seat and providing along the outer edge of the same the downwardly-extending flange 12. This provides a groove 13 on the under side of the seat-arm. Arranged on the outer side of the seat, slightly below the level of the top edge of the box, is provided the horizontal cleat 14, which is arranged parallel to the seat-arm 11 and is provided with the upstanding iiange 15, thus forming a groove 16 between said iiange and the side of the seat. The seat-back extends beyond the side of the seat, forming a stop 17. The wings 10 conform, substantially, to the shape of the side of the seat and the upper and lower edges slide in the grooves 13 and 16, respectively.

The front ends of the wings are each provided with the posts 18. These posts are preferably flush with the outer sides of the wings 10 and extend inwardly to cover the front end of the seat-side when in open position. The lower ends of the posts rest upon the top edge of the box and are provided with the angular keepers or guide-arms 19. These guide-arms consist of the horizontal portions 20, which rest upon the top edge of the vehicle-box, and the depending portions 21, which engage the inner side of said box. The tops of the posts 18 preferably extend slightly above the top edge of the seat-side. By this constructionit will be seen that the side wings are slidably mounted upon the vehicle-box and that when slid across the openin g between the front edges of the seat-sides and the dashboard they completely close said openings and prevent all mud and dirt or rain from splashing in upon the occupants. It will also be noted that they .may be slid back, so that they are completely out ofthe way during fair weather or while a person is entering or alighting from the vehicle, and because of their conforming to the shape of the seat they are ornamental and do not detract from the beauty of the vehicle.

While the invention has been described and shown as being applied to the outside of a vehicle body, it will be evident to those skilled in the art that the device may be applied with equal facility to the inner sides of the body and that it may be applied to other-shaped vehicles and slidably supported in any approved` manner.

From the foregoing it is thought that the construction,operation,and many advantages of the herein-described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, and it Will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-

1. A vehicle-body having extensible side members supported upon the sides of the seat below the seat-arms, and adapted to be projected in advance of the seat, substantially as described.

ranged arm having a groove in its under side, a horizontally-arranged cleat fastened to the body substantially parallel to the arm and having a groove in its upper surface, an eXtensible wing slidably mounted in said grooves, and a guide-arm carried by said Wing and arranged to engage the top edge of the vehicleboX, substantially as described.
